This same thing happened to freind that races dirt track with my brother. They pulled him over and asked him if he had won any money. This is here in Mississippi. Luckely the guy owns a towing company and he has a commercial license. My Dad started keeping a log of when he cranks the rig up and moves it. He writes down the mileage, when he got on the road and when and where he stopped and for how long he was there for this same reason. He also pays for everything with a check so that he has the copy of it as a backup reciept. Also in MS those of us that drive desiel pickups like the Ford F-250 that i own, We have to pay for a commercial tag for it. Yet we don't have commercial ratings on our license. explain that to me. I use a 18' open trailer to tow my TA. This sucks.

What state is that article written about. My Pennsylvania class C non commercial license clearly states on the back of the license.

single/comb < 26,001

My 3,500 Silverado 11,400 GVW
My 10,000 lb 26' enclosed trailer around 9,500 full (over estimating)

11,400 (fully loaded to the max).
9,500

20,900 total.

Commercial licence in PA starts at 26,001 and over
Class A over 26,001 combined
Class B over 26,001 single
Class C is a bus I believe

I have a PA State policeman checking for me. I'll get back.

Here in Ca. it is similar ... but you guys probably knew that. One way of getting around this is, if you have an enclosed trailer, do not put any signage on the trailer. If they see advertisements on the trailer (enclosed) or the car (open trailer) ... then you run the risk of being pulled over.

I guess we need to upgrade to an enclosed trailer fast.

I asked the Maryland DOT the same thing earlier this year. As long as it weighs less than 26001 lbs and isn't used for commercial purposes its exempt from DOT rules

You are not correct. You are referring to a non commercial class C license. I was refering to a commercial class C license.

Class C non commercial is exactly what you are saying and you can drive a combination / vehicle less than 26,001 lbs and tow a trailer less than 10,001 lbs. Combination less than 26,001 lbs.

Class C commercial: Single vehicles with a commercial gross vehicle weight of less than 26,001 lbs if the vehicle is; transporting hazardous material, is designed to transport 16 or more passingers including the driver, or is a school bus.

Go to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and get the facts. There are also many restrictions.
