Default Buddy claims 12.1 @ 96 mph? Is it possible?

I have a guy at my work who has a 68 camaro with a 402 BBC in it. He claims that he ran a bunch of 12.1 and 12.2's at 96 mph! Is this even possible?

I think you'd have to be well on your way to an 11.80 pass and hit the brakes at the 1000' mark everytime.

Oh he also claims that his motor was built to make about 650 hp. I would just like to confirm the suspicion that he is full of **** and shut him up.

Just wondering if anybody has seen anything weird like this.

Yeah that sounds like a legitimate answer. I don't think he could be that retarded though.

sounds to me like he's hitting the brakes so as not to hit 11s and be kicked off for no roll cage.

you don't get kicked off the track in hawaii for not having a cage. I don't think they even know what tech is. Plus you don't need a cage until 11.5

I'd ask for more times (1/8 mile, 60 foot, 1000 foot, etc) and then the BS meter may peg, or the "hitting the brakes" theory may have some footing

Or a car that's all traction and torque and no top
end power. Like a full weight, back-halfed, small
displacement big-block on slicks.

Is the 402 a SBC 400 or a BBC 396? I can never
remember....

Oh yes they do. Also it wasn't too long ago that 12.00 was the rollbar threshold.

He is lifting/braking.

I'm assuming its not a manual transmission, right? Something similar happened to me with my car, but it was because I missed the 3-4 shift.

402 should be a BBC 396 .030 over. I assume the other guys are right assuming that he's lifting at the top end.

Even then, it'd have to be going 105-108 mph to get those times I'd think.

The 396 big block was in fact "402" cubes but GM didn't list it as such until 1971 in Chevelles becuase the "SS396" badging worked so well to sell cars. It was made even worse in 1971 b/c they also badged the 402 low hp engine a "Turbo-Jet 400" and of course there was a 400 small block in the mid 70s in trucks and passenger cars, including the 74-76 Chevelle.

If he's lifting at 1000 foot mark (as an example) you'll only lose 1-2 tenths and about 8-12 mph (depending on car, gearing, etc and assuming you don't hit the brakes). If this holds true, it could be a high 11 second car without much trouble.

nobody mentioned this, but he could be running out of gear- don't know if they even make gears that steep though.

1- lifting
2- way out of gear
3- really loose converter

I bet #1 unless he's running like a 4.88 and floating the valves from the 1/8th on.

Well i talked to him again and he said "well maybe it was 12.6" So i think he is bull shitting me.

Plus it's basically a relatively mild car. Not setup for dragging AT ALL. Plus he had a 2000 stall converter in it and 3.08 gears. definitely not running out of gear.

He told me today also that he wasnt lifting but was still shifting really low. Like 4500 rpms or something stupid like that. Would that make more sense.

Are you asking if that ET is possible with that speed?

Here's a couple of results from the Top Fuel O'rielly Nationals qualifying last week.

Right Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 9.716/82.32, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.625/309.49, Was #3

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 12.059/64.35, Now #7
Best prior run: 4.676/312.78, Was #7

But that usually takes an 8,000 HP nitro burning, 70 lb boost supercharged, 500 CI engine running direct drive.
