There's more to it than just what size rear...posi, spool, gear ratio...etc.

Ok so given the both have 35 spline axles, the same gear and a spool. Comparable axle sizes and such

9" will lose more. It's a hypoid type gear, engaging more teeth at once on the pinion. I've had a couple 9" rears, and they both lost nearly 30rwhp compared to a 10 bolt. The 12 bolt will usually lose like 12 to 15.

it's a trade off... 9" will eat up more power but will hold up to more power than a 12 bolt.

I switched to a 9" and figured I'd make up the lost hp by going w/ bigger turbos.

Same here. The 12-bolt wasn't going to handle what I've got cooking for it. Hopefully the 9" will. According to Moser, the 35-splines will work...barely.

Strange makes a center section that will fit a 9" housing but uses 12 bolt gears.

Got a link to that madman?

What benifit is it though? I've thought he 12bolt was lighter, so whats the point of puting it in a heaver case? Whats the point of going with the center section, when the 9" holding point is more teeth touching the gear?

I've heard of a 12bolt with 9" bearings, but still unsure of what that really helps.

oh and didn't bigrick go 8s with 31 or 33 splines?

get 35+ spline/gun drilled for weight savings...

The 12 bolt takes less hp to turn. I dont have a link but Stranges part number is a PRG500.

Big Rick has a 9" and I have been screaming at him to get bigger axles.

Madman, You sure that will work?

A friend of mine called Strange about that setup and it was not reccomended for an Fbod. Supposedly it's not as strong and is better for a very lightweight ride. Now.....this is what he was told. Do you know anyone that's actually running it? I had thought about that for mine at one time.

I wouldnt try it unless it was a N/A car. I was just giving options.

If you want a low drag 9" center section get the new Mark Williams unit.

with stock rear and gears i made 420/391 in 60deg weather in november, with my set up i got now is a moser 9in with spool 35 splin gun drilled axles and 4.11 gears. i made 404/381 in 107geg heat (hottest day here this summer) so in my opion 16hp not a big loss for me and i think it will be even less in cooler weather. and i got a rear im not skeerd of breaking any more

www.markwilliams.com

The Mar Williams is about $2000.00 higher but the benefits are killer as far as weight and drag.
