Default Th400 Scatter Shield

Has anyone used a metal scatter shield without having to beat the snot out of the trans tunnel? I want to use a Hughes or CSR scatter shield to protect against an exploding drum, and I dont want to pay 300$ for the Supershield or whatever.

None will fit our car and a TH400. I have tried. Just buy the SFI certified bell housing.

The bellhousing is nice, but that doesnt protect against drum failues, just felxplate failures.

BTW, can I cut the th400 housing for the ultrabell after the tranny is built? I just got one delivered without an ultrabell on it...

I have a B&M that fits perfectly without any clearancing. Maybe I got lucky. I also have a JW ultrabell.

I use a regular RCI blanket, easy to get on/off even with the trans in the car. I know they suck if your trans leaks but I coudnt get a metal shield to fit at all. The CSR is nice but $$. I can speak from direct experience that a blanket will hold a TH400 direct drum explosion.

As you can see in the pic even with a deep pan it doesn hang down too bad, my car is pretty low and it doesnt rub at all.

Ya, Me too. Except now I believe they are CSR. Part #833 i think. I've done about a 1/2 dozen of these now on th 400 & 350. The first one I did was a pita to get a socket on the bolts but sence then I've started using Ford 4.6 V8 bell bolts, they have a reduced head and make the install much easier.

Like KP said, if you cannot get the shield to fit run a blanket and a ultra bell. The blanket will keep the drum captured.

How hard is the ultrabell to install? My case is sitll one piece. Can I just cut it off here with a cutoff wheel or does it have to be precise?

Sawzall, or a hacksaw and a hammer if you feel lucky, will work fine. Just take your time.

I'm running a Ultra Bell and a CSR sheild w/ no problems. I had to buy my own bolts for the bellhousing though.
