Guys running 165/15R tires as skinnies...
Has anyone had any trouble with them at the track? Having a speed rating of 92 mph or whatever and taking them up to 120+ makes me uncomfortable. I bought the wheels used and these tires were on them and I'd like to take it to the track tonight. Will they be ok or are my concerns legit? Will running more or less air in them make them more safe?

If you are referring to the metric 165R/15's you buy at pep boys real cheap, then they are rated up to 118mph. They are a 4 ply sidewall so it will look as if the tire is low on air. I ran them for a while on my car and never had any probs. In a heavy F-body or SN95 mustang it may be too much weight. But in a light fox body mustang you can get away with it. But if you are already running them and trapping 120 I think you'd be ok. -Mark

Hundreds of Thousands of racers run the Volkswagon tires.. We usually get them for $70-$80 bucks a set and have NEVER had a problem out of them. I do know 1 person that said his kept getting knots on the sidewalls, but I think that was just a bad brand of tires. You will be just fine with them...

I have witnessed cars trapping over 150mph with these tires. THe speed rating is given on a sustained speed over a distance. The distance is determined by the U.S. Highway safety board. The number of ply's referes to the number of component's in the construction of the tire, 4 ply = 1 liner (very inner of tire) 1 fabric (second layer with bleeder strings) and 2 breakers (steel belts). I am a tire construction tech. for Michelin, finally something I can list the facts about. Thats all.
