Default Putting a LS1 motor in an early 4th gen or v6 body...

I figured I would post this here because there isn't a specific forum for it, and drag racing would be the only use for the car. For those of you that have done it, did you have to do anything special? I heard that the earlier 4th gen bodies (93-97) are different. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

The floor is different, different tranny X member, K member is different. Other then that pretty much the same except for the wiring. For that I would visit the hybred forum. Good luck

Magnus did one, swapped an LS1/A4 into a 97 Firebird 3.8 car. You need the crossmember and other stuff.

its really easy.

just bolt in a LS1 Kmember, and crossmember, and it becomes a bolt in swap.

the wiring we did was minimal, stand alone wiring.. not stock wiring. but it woudlnt be hard to use stock wiring.

overall, its probly the easiest LS1 swap out there.... btw, i dont know whats diffrent in the floorpan, but whatever it is, it isnt much... looks identical to me...

only thing no one everthinks about is the steering rack! the lt1 rack will not fit with an ls1..... otherwise you can use 98 headers ... ls1 k member eather stock or aftermarket....... and thats pretty much it. ofcourse wiring harness etc..

but the steering rack is one thing no one ever thinks about.

So I would want to use the steering rack out of a LS1 car correct?

What is different about the wiring? Would I be able to use the one from my 2000 and just moddify that?

yeah you need an ls1 rack...... eather manual like a mad man or a stock one. yeah you can take a 2000 wiring harness and send it out and have it modified to work as a standalone engine managment... reason being is that harness plugs into alot more than just the motor... or you can buy a aftermarket for about 600 bucks...

like what?

the only thing that harness plugs into (not counting the motor or PCM) is power.... power, ground.. and it runs. add in a couple more wires for gauges, connect the ONE wire for the ODBII plug, and you're done.

yes, theres EXTRA wires there for other things.. but you dont need them.
its not like you have to send it out to work as a "standalone".. it basiclly is stand alone already... theres only 5 plugs on the thing. 3 underhood, and 2 that connect to the BCM underdash.

I will not be using power steering, ABS, traction control, HVAC, A/C, radio, wipers. The only thing power will be windows if the roller I get has them. The car would be for track use only.

Yeah if I put it in the 98. The reason I made the thread was because I had the chance to get a 94 firebird but thought it would be too much work to get it all in there. I had heard 93-97 & 98-02 were different. If the deal with the 98 falls through, at least I know I can use an older body style and make it work.

Stock ls1 rack will fit right in easy as pie - don't forget the coupler. LT1/V6 rack uses a rag joint - no fun.
