when you install the raptor in defroster vent, do you need to cut that hose or just stick the shift light in that? and put the gromet on the end? anyone have a writeup on the rapter defroster install?

well, I went the Harlan route, waited a couple weeks to get it and then sat it on a shelf for about a month...then I finally got around to installing it and BAM! it doesnt work...The lights come on just fine during "power up" but for some reason it doesnt receive the tach signal so I basically waisted $55...Oh well, it looks like I'll be installing a tach w/ a shiftlight instead.

I always tell people to set it very low to check it, that way you can catch an improper cylinder setting.

Yes I made 300-500 rpm adjustments from about 1k-rpm up to 5500rpm and nothing...I tapped into the correct location for the signal but for some reason it just wont come on.
Edit: Wow, I played with it again this morning (that doesnt even sound right, lol) and it came on @ the 2500 rpm setting, but when I brought it up to 3k, it stopped working again...idk what the deal is with that thing.
Also Harlan, let me apologize if I came off as bashing you as that wasnt my intent, I was just frustrated with dealing with the light and voiced my problem so maybe someone could shed some light on the situation.

I'm running the Raptor red led/black housing in my personal car (2003 twin turbo Z06). Needless to say with almost 800hp at the wheels, 1st-3rd gear come up fast and the oem tach just cannot keep up.
I can't say which is better (Harlan over Raptor) since I've only ever owned a Raptor, but I can tell you that the Raptor is worth every dollar to me personally. I bought it retail through Raptor about a year ago (not through our store).
For me, the things I liked about the shift light hookup were:
(a) ease of install -- just 3 wires to connect, all of which were behind the knee bolster in my Z06 leading to the instrument cluster. only took around an hour for me to install.
(b) settings are accessible once installed -- the Raptor sort of 'snaps' into place into a C-clip, so it's very easy for me to pull the unit out to adjust RPM on it... furthermore, RPM is adjusted using simple rotary dials so it's very intuitive how to adjust it at the track if need be.
(c) it's tiny enough to go into my a-pillar without being obvious. when I built this car I wanted it to be stealth so I didn't want massive gauges and lights sticking out of my pillar. I mounted the shift light up high as you can see in the pic below and you can hardly tell it's there from outside the car.
Looks good, more than visible from inside, but from any angle outside you can't see it. Specifically, I tried a few different angles I thought a police officer might be standing from![Grin](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_grin.gif)

The last pic is a close up of the rotary dials and dip switches. The dip switches are used for cylinder selection only and then left alone after initial setting. As you can see the rotary dials are user friendly -- my shift light is set to 6000rpm in this picture.

We are currently running a free shipping special on the Raptor lights if anyone is interested. These will be in stock and ready to ship at the end of this week. Ordinarily there would not be a shipping delay like this, but Raptor has announced a $20 price increase coming in July so a lot of people are ordering or stocking up on these lights. Now is definitely the time to pick one up if you are interested.
