Do I need to remove this before I race at the track? Also i dont know why it is there (previous owners engineering) everything looks fine (motor mounts etc) but I left it there since it isnt hurting anything

you shouldn't need to remove it unless it is in the way of something...

I looks like a ghetto torque strap to help limit the torque over of the motor, ya never know if it needs it it might actually help you out at the track...

Maybe the alternator was throwing the belt or something, but not exactly the right way to keep something from moving IMHO. I'd remove it if you feel the rest of the engine (including the motor mounts) is secure before making a pass.

+1 for the ghetto torque strap. It's probably there for a reason, either bad motor mounts or more than likely a banging y-pipe.

That very well could be it, it has an aftermarket exhaust from headers to tips and above one pipe is an aluminum surfaced peice of insulation or something. So either it banged or got hot, never really thought to look into that part to deeply.
