Default Rear tire size Question?

I think I am running out of gear in the 1/4. My MPH is 117 with 4.10 gears. I am running Nitto 555r extreem drags on the car 275/40/17's. What is the tire OD on that combo? I thought it was 26", but was recently told it is 25". I am looking for another tire possibly et streets. will a 26 et street give me any more mph? or do I need a 27"?

that is a 26" tire (give or take a few tenths of an inch). what rpm are you at going through the traps? how fast do you plan on going?

Shift light is on before the traps @ 6500. Probably crossing the traps @ 6800~

The 27" will not give you more MPH, it will give you less due to the fact that you are taking gear away. I would look into the MT Drag Radials as they are a MUCH better tire than their ET Streets. They have them in a 28" size now for the 17" rims.

Dave, this calculator can be helpful. (Or maybe misleading? lol)

http://www.f-body.org/gears/

It shows that at 117 mph, a car with those tires (25.66") and 4.10's is at 6300 rpm. Go figure.

trap speed is an average. not your final speed at the end of the 1/4 mile.

It's an average but it's an average over the last 66 feet. If your trap reads 117 you're probably passing the first MPH light at 116+ and going out the end less than 118. You're just not accelerating that violently so near the end of the 1320.

Just to clarify the post that Matt D made. You will get more MPH out of a taller tire given the same RPM however taking gear away via increasing tire diameter will make you accelerate more slowly during the entire pass possibly hurting your final MPH.

dave your gears are fine i was trapping 125+ this weekend on my 26" hoosiers and still had rpm left
4.10's w/ a 26" tire can go close to if not 130

26x10.5 et street is what you'd want i think

as long as the thing's not on the limiter going thru the traps, let it eat!

Yeah that's what I meant. If you keep the same gear and power level, and only go bigger on the tire, your trap speed will be lower. Thanks for clarifying it

Something else to keep in mind is this: are you hooking off the line ok? If not, that will tend to make your mph higher which could be the reason your running out of gear. If you simply go to 26" M/T ET Streets, you may hook better. And the ET's will "grow" alittle at higher speeds giving you the gear ratio you are needing through the traps. Try, 26" ET's. If that doesn't work go to 27".

I run 26x10.50 ET Streets with 4.30 gears and my shift light set at 6500 RPM just turns on when i am crossing the line at 117mph.
