a guy i work with told me to not get too low on fuel at the track because it will go into open loop.
this didn't make any sense to me but i thought i would check just in case

it is in open loop under WOT anyway but if the tank is close to empty the pump may come close to running dry and lean out the motor. the bucket holds a good amount but still not enough for me to feel comfortible .

with you.I wouldn't get too low on fuel, anytime, because I don't want to pull any dirt out of my tank, cloging my filters and injectors with dirt. I don't want my stock fuel pump, normally located in my tank, to be out of the cool fuel too long because of heat. Some people will place a tank in a new location to gain balance.

From: Gainesville, Florida # of drag strips runs: ?!?!?
as mentioned above, too low on gas can create headaches on dirt in the tank, fuel sloshing away from the pickup during a launch that may produce air in the lines, etc. I've run with 1/4 tank before but no less. I usually run 3/4 or more (extra weight back there for helpm in the hooking dept if needed on a slick track).
