Tomorrow is the big day I think, my friend is supposed to bring a scale. I have a box full of every piece I cut out of the car, it feels pretty heavy.

I'm mini-tubbing my 3rd gen right now too. I know it isn't a 4th gen but they're so similar back there, I'm sure the weights would be close. I've taken some pretty heavy pieces of metal out. I'll try to measure too. I'm thinking it'll save a few pounds.

Default Weight of metal from mini tubbing

I weighed the metal cut out for mini tubbing my 1998 Camaro today.

The tubs were cut to give exactly 16" of clearance from the outer fender lip to the tub.

The weight includes the brackets next to the middle set of speakers that runs from behind the door to the rear seat that gets cut off and also the 2 brackets that hold the rear upper part of the seat.

Ready??????

Total weight on a digital scale "49 pounds"

I will also include the weight of all the metal and new tubs after they are cut and prefit and then weigh those. I am guessing a 20-25 pound weight savings when the job is done.

Yes, I was surprised I knew the box felt heavy, but 49 pounds of metal, that's a lot, and you figure all you put back is thin sheet metal tubs and a piece of metal to box in both sides of the frame, there is no way possible that will come even close to the same amount.

I knew the factory tubs I cutout were pretty heavy. Couple that with a narrowed (lighter) rear, you can really start shaving weight...

I narrowed my rear but boy those aftermarket axles sure are heavy. Maybe the spool being lighter than the unit will offset that.

49 lbs huh? Good info. Does that include the rear bumper?

The 49 pounds listed "ONLY" includes the factory metal and brackets cut out to make room for the new mini tubs.

I have a 1998 Camaro, and also removed and weighed the front bumper with foam (20) pounds and rear bumper with plastic reinforcement also (20) pounds.

I weighed them on a digital scale.

So far I have taken 103 pounds out of the car this week and still have the full carpet and factory seats =)

I just hope the new tubs and metal to box the frame are not much weight, hoping they are not more than 20-25 pounds trimmed and fitted.

***PS The rear seat will fit after the car is mini tubbed by removing the lower mounting bracket and hinges up top if you cut to make room for tubs 16" from fender lip to the tubs***

I am going to just drill into the back of the seat and use some "L" brackets to fasten the seat to the sheet metal behind the seat and at the bottom of the seat with some flat metal strips.

I'm sure your car is set up for nitrous but you ever run it on just motor? I'm just curious how far off we are on our motor. It has a nitrous cam & small headers but we haven't ran nitrous. It's kind of a mismatched combo right now. sorry.

Any weight you can get out of an F-body is good weight. It doesn't matter if the weight comes from the back or front. That is what the suspension tuner is for. When you get the car's weight down, you will struggle to get another 25lbs out. I have minitubs and I can still fit my stock plastics. I also have a narrowed rear with all lightweight stuff in it. I weigh in at 3005 with me in it with a iron motor.

JP......You need my assistance when you start cutting. I know where lots of hidden weight is at.

So where are some other good spots to remove weight?
