Cage Requirements

Default Cage Requirements

My car is getting quicker and with a few more mods I'll be below that magical 11.49 et. What is the cage requirement/breakdown? 4 point, 6 point, 8 point etc. Does ET determine which cage? Getting ready for the next round of mods and I wanna go fast as safe as possible. Chime in with your info.

11.49 and faster you need a 6 point bar, and 9.99 and faster you need a 10 point. those are the NHRA rules i think. IHRA rules i dont think you need a 10 point untill your 9.49.

i heard there was a MPH requirement for a 10 point too, but im not sure

I dont think I will ever see 9s but I do plan on 10s. If not with my current motor, I know I'll do it with the 396 I have on the stand. Lots of companys selling cages at fair prices. I was thinking of getting a kit and welding it in. Any kind of certification requirements assosicated with a weld in cage?

If you plan to go 10's I'd get a 6 pt rollbar/cage. My preference is always chromemoly to keep the weight down, but the difference is maybe 30 lbs vs. mild steel.

is there a MPH requirement where you need to go to a 10 point, somebody told me if you go over a certain mph you need a 10 point, even if your not in the ET range to need one, just curious if thats true

It might be 150 mph, but I bet it's enforced on a sporadic basis.

pics of a 10 point?

and yall guys running the bars through the dash...how hard is it to remove the factory dash pad and stuff..hows the neatest way to do it?
i plan to get into the 9.50 range but dont wanna go 10 point...i might just stick to a 6 point

You can't run a 6 point in the 9.50 range you need a cage at that ET.

Also at 9.99 or faster than 135, you'll need more safety equipment, neck collar, layered jacket, pants, think gloves too.

Plus More SFI requirements on trans shields / clutch shields and more misc. stuff I am sure.

By the time you get legal for 10's, it's really not a huge deal to be legal for 9's. Alot of the stuff you mentioned is for 9.0 and faster

i thought the new rules were a 6 point roll bar is only good for 10.49 after that is a cage

Actually it is a kind of a 'Big' deal to go 9.999 or faster with most tracks that are NHRA. They usually miss the 135mph mark but are ALL over the time. If you do it during a race you are done, no more racing. You need a licence and a Certified car to even come back. Also Neck Collar, gloves, FULL fire suit and my most hated the Window net

A 10 point is not manditory unless the fire wall has been hacked up or the car is back halfed. Most of us have not done that so no need for a dash bar or the extra two points forward. My car was fully Certified to 8.50 and 150. At 150 I need a paracute and it will cert higher.


You guys really need to dig in the rules for the classes you plan on running or will licence for. I licenced for S/ST and ET. The rules are ever evolving so it can be hard to keep up but people like KP and a few others usually have a handle on it. I keep a rule book on hand at all time and you can check the site for updates

Lots of good info here. I think for my purposes, a 6 point will do nicely! Dont want to do it , but I like to race. How do I get hold of a NHRA/IHRA rule book?

Well, I guess it is a big deal to run 9's in NHRA. You don't have to have a chassis cert until 9.00 in IHRA. If you are legal for 10's, the only thing you need in IHRA is an SFI flexplate, master cutoff, and the cage upgrade with the net. Of course you will need to do liscencing runs, but that's not a huge deal.

i thought with IHRA rules you can run a 6 point at 9.50 or slower. i know NHRA rules you need a 10 point.

looks like im getting a 10 point for sure if its 135mph that you need one, cause im all motor right now going almost 127, and its going to see a big shot
