Default Thinking ahead, how to set the vacuum on my Star vacuum system?

I hope to start putting my motor back in tonight and HOPEFULLY start working on mounting the vacuum system Friday. So before I get myself in a slump/bind/etc., I want to know beforehand how am I going to set the vacuum on my Star vacuum pump system? I bought the optional adjustable regulator that is adjustable by simply moving the nut one way or another.

Anyone? I plan on taking the car to the track tonight, but need to know how to set the vacuum on it. I assume I need to put some type of gauge on it, but where does it need to go?

You need a vacuum gauge on the valve cover to see what the pump pulls. Then rev the motor up to around 3500 rpms and see what it makes. I normally try to see 4-5 inches at 3500 rpm. Then go to the track and try to see the gauge going down track. I dont like to see more than 10 inches at max rpm.

See, I was already wrong. I was thinking 12-15 inches.

I'm pulling the vacuum from the valley cover. I cut the vent off, filled it in (aluminum weld), drilled a hole and welded a -12 AN fitting on the valley cover. So that's where I have it hooked up at.

My valve covers (GMPP) have no openings other than the fill cap. So where shall I put it?

You can drill and tap the valve cover and go from there. You can go as high 12-15 I just havent seen any benefits. Ask your engine builder his recommendations on how much vacuum.

Ok, I'll do that. Another thing on the list I need to add (vacuum gauge). Thanks for your help.

Which vacuum pump did you go with? If you went with the standard one its got a pressure relief valve you can use to set the vacuum. I also set my old one to 2-3 inches @ 3k and went to 10 @ 7500. If you went with the smaller pump you need to get a relief valve.

I can ask, my buddy builds motors, the 406 with 18* heads runs a vacuum pump, it has a little breather with a valve he turns to adjust the vacuum. I'll call ask ask.

I went with the Standard pump. I know how to adjust it, but I was wondering how I measure it. I obviously need to put a gauge on it. Where did you put the gauge at? Any pics?

I had my old setup alittle different, valve cover went to catch can, catch can went to pump, pump went to air. I was trying to keep the oil out of the unit which makes the rotors stick in the housing or come out slower. I had a 1/8" Barb on my catch can that I put a vacuum guage on.

I was going to go from valley cover to pump, then from the pump to the catch can. Is this not a good way to do it?
