Default More Gutting!!!

Well it time again for more weight reduction and i was wondering if any of you guys cut all the metel out behind the dash and run a fiberglass dash. I just want to see a pic so i know how it should look, my cage guy said it weights a LOT... Let me know Im trying to get the car down really light under 3000lbs with me in it

There isn't any metal behind the dash other than the firewall. You certainly don't want to go cutting on the firewall. I suppose you could toss the metal bracket that runs along the bottom of the dash, but I can't see that amounting to much. Besides, you'd have to add metal attachments back in order to have something to attach the dash to. The fiberglass dashes that I've seen are the Firebird version. If you've got a Camaro, it obviously won't match your stock dash. Just something to keep in mind.

like y2k said.. there is not much metal back there. the only metal i came into contact with was the passenger airbag support/attachment and the lower cross bar for the bottom of the dash to attach to.

There is a big *** layer of metel right below the front window that sticks out a lot past the firewall it is where the top of the dash monts to, that is why im going to use a fiber glass dash after i cut it out, Its there ill try to take a pic tomarro Its a drag only car so i dont care about full stock appearance

The factory dash without the heat and passenger airbag can't weigh more than 5-10 lbs. It isn't worth spending the money on a fiberglass dash. I would spend that on drag brakes or a k-member.

bah, start with a base 3rd gen camaro hardtop. even with an all iron motor many of them had curb weights well under 3100lbs. a little well thought out weight redux and the aluminum advantage of an LS1, you are looking at a 2800-2900lbs car with a full interior and a cage

That looks scary but that is where I'm headed. I just hope I can leave the headliner in when the cage gets welded in.

Try lining the headliner with welding splatter paper?

i have a bunch of pieces of thin aluminum that i use. welding paper just costs too damn much, you can pick up scrap flashing from pretty much any construction site.
you can prevent a lot of spatter with a good cleaning and weld through primer too

Well it will be chromoloy and tig welded so that cuts down on the splatter. But I don't want to replace it if something happens. I also don't want to try and squeeze it back in above the bars. Thanks for the ideas.

Thanks for the info. It is going http://www.midwestchassis.com/contact_us.html . They are a sponcer here. I may give him a call and double check thou . Looks nice by the way. Did you get a dash bar too? I see the sill bar in there. Looks like you have some extra cross bracing too.

Heres a pic of my dash

I think I may do a little trimming.
