Default 2008 parachute rules

I was at my brothers shop today and a guy told me the NHRA parachute rule changed. He said it was no longer 150mph. Is this true or bs? If its true what is the new rule?

I just looked at my 2008 NHRA rule book and it looks to be the same. 150 MPH, and/or 9.99 and below.

Wait a second.... since when do you have to have a chute @ 9.99 or faster? I know about the 150 mph, but 9.99 too? Don't tell me I have to do that already

It's required at only 9.99 now?

I've seen people go a lot faster than that and I thought you didn't even have to pull it unless you go like 165 or something

I don't think it's required that you pull the chute as long as you can get the car safely stopped. It just has to be on the car per the rules. Heck, I used to see Whit Bazemore stop his Nitro Funny Car all the time after a full pass without using the chutes.

So anything in the single digits now needs a parachute. Great.

2008 NHRA rule book outlines a parachute only being required where classes deem it necessary. In the rules for bracket classes (also TNT general running), Super Street (10.90 index) and Super Gas (9.90 index), it is listed as: "Mandatory on any car that runs 150 mph or faster."

so it's mandatory on 150 mph or faster, which has always been my understanding. Last thing I want to hear about at this point is having to put one on a 9.5x car..... even @ 139 mph on the stock brakes and when I say stock, I mean the factory equipped rotors and pads (only 19K on the car though LOL) the car would just about stop for the first turnoff @ 1/2 the tracks I've been to, with the slicks and skinnies ifI got on the brakes hard enough.

Now with the drag brakes I expect that to not be the case, but nowhere near to the point that a chute is needed.....

Oh it's not a matter of it looking cool, that's not the issue at all. I just don't want to be bothered this year with it, for a recap of what I'm already doing this year for this spring:

Full drag brake conversion, redoing all the lines, manual master
6 pt to 10 pt cage for 8.50 cert.
k member, upper and lower a arms, manual steering
motor plate
gutting down the wiring harness so all uneeded stuff is gone
redoing fuel system and going to a 3 gallon fuel cell in the front
redoing the rear, going to 3.73 in hopes the car will go 140 to 145 under 7000 rpm
freshening motor
Bigger headers and having an E-town legal exhaust fabbed up

I've got a TON to do, and a TON of $ left I have to spend, I just don't want to have to work another grand into the equation. Next year shaving the cowl and going to a pin on hood that goes to the windshield, a parachute and a painless wiring harness were the plans, I don't want to have to worry about it this year. Plus, towing the car on an open trailer, I can just see the chute opening up on the highway on me as I go over a big bump I'm still on an open car trailer, and will be until I move somewhere I can have enough room for an enclosed, which isnt' gonna happen in the next couple years that's for sure.

Stroud sells a locking pin to keep the chute closed until you remove it...that "remove before flight" tag...a definate must for open trailer hauling

you dont think that would look cool on the freeway with the chute deployed going 70mph with the open trailer

Good way to get rid of the tailgaters, but the constant re-packing would get old....

You put the chute in the trunk for the tow, its a lot easier

Or just take the whole thing off, I can have the whole chute mount off the car in five minutes..

i cant wait to go 150 so i can add a chute they look sick. i saw a 03-04 cobra once looked stock minus rims and a chute hell even sounded stock. then it pulled to the line did a burnout and you could hear the spool. it was deff a 6sp car and had 1 or a pair of turbos and went 151 wow what a turn on. hell if all i have to do is go 9.99 im way closer than i thought. i know i could put it on but i want to earn it.
