Default Different use for MAF Translator, question...

My car presently has a great HPTuners tune in it, and car runs very well for it's mods imo.

I hope to run some INDEX CLASS Racing this year but since my car runs 11.67 at last time out (with a bunch of 11.70's as well), I figured it'd be easier to slow it down to 12.0 class than it would be to try and run 11.50 index class consistently.

My plan would be to add a MAF Translator to it and slow the car down (as needed) by richening up wot a/f mixture (also, as needed). That way "tune" is not changed except on the days i need to tweak car to slow it down...

my original idea was to lower shift points, but since my tuner isn't at track with me I'd never be able to accurately dial the ET in like I could by other means.

any thoughts/suggestions/ideas, since me running laptop tune myself is not a possibility.

I have seen a couple people successfully slow there car down by using a throttle stop. Just drill and top the TB stop and put a screw w/ a spring over it. The good thing about this method is it's adjustable, so you can get it close beforehand and fine tune as needed later.

Personally I'd just get yourself a laptop and a copy of HP tuners, and get your tuner to show you what to adjust on the tune to do what you're looking to do. Easy way would be to know what the max safe timing is and what the shift points are when the car is at max potential, then just turn it back a touch to get it to the # you need, plus if you really get good with it and get really into the bracket/index thing, a weather station would be a good investment, then as you learn the car, you will know, if the DA changes 200 points from one run to the next, like it can at night, you know the car is gonna pick up so you can knock a degree out and know you'll be good to go.

Personally I'm trying to build to race a 9.5 index, and I was planning on doign it via the amount of nitrous I run. I'm hoping a 100 shot will get the car to 9.50 on a good day, if the weather/track sucks then 125 or 150 will bump it up/down as I need. Fine tuning, say by decreasing the fuel or adding fuel by one jet size if say I'm at 9.54 and need to be at 9.50 would be the next steps.

thanks for ideas guys.

the throttle stop idea sounds good...as does the tweak the tune myself idea...

my tuner's actually the person who suggested trying the translator as a quick adjustment that i probably couldn't screw anything else up with...

I really don't think the MAFT is gonna do what you're trying to accomplish. I wouldn't buy one to try and be disappointed if it doesn't work. Maybe if you could borrow one from someone first.

a cheap laptop and HPT is easier and more predictable for dialing the car than the translator. electronic shift points are a constant, maf readings are veriable, sonstants win every time.

good luck in the coming season.

I have a predator, and you can do that with it... if you want it I'll sell it, but it will have to go back to get reset for your Vin.

the throttle stop idea is genius, and the cheapest.
don`t bother wasting your money or any tuner other than EFILive.

looking at rules, i think you are right

• NO delay boxes or purposely marketed throttle stops allowed.
since mine would be a homemade, custom stop...it should be legal....according to the official rules

yeah, they are gonna burn you on it.

i don't understand why you want to jump through hoops and play games with the rules when HPTuners can take care of it and give you the ability to update all of the other tuning for your car for years and years to come.

HP Tuners is what is used most with the guys I run with while index racing. If you have ANY form of a throttle stop that is visible on the car, they will DQ you. NMCA officials are *****, but for a GOOD reason!

You could lower your shift points, like on the 1-2 shift, and get it close to a 12.0, say 11.9, and then add/subtract weight to get it close.

I'm hoping I can get my Camaro down to 10.5's on motor so I can run 10.5 indexes, it would be even better if I ran 10.40-10.45.

you could make a restrictor plate to regulate the amount of air going in . kind of like what nascar does , all you got to do is find the sweet spot . then just pull the plate when you want to run off the track .

i already said that "me" doing laptop tuning wasn't a possibility. i have a great tuning guy (with free re-tunes for life) but he surely isn't going to travel around with me to play with shift points and whatnot. he's actually who suggested the maf translator to slow the car down on any given day.

as for the throttle stop idea, there's nothing wrong with using, or bending, rules to your advantage...if nobody did, all cars in a given class would all run the same....very boring, imo

the racers that do use the rules to their advantage are usually the ones who win...it is not cheating, since you aren't breaking a rule, but it is surely using the rules to give yourself an advantage...

btw matt d, this is not nmca class...it is local east coast n/a index class racing

since lowering shift points would surely work, i'm going to research if a predator setup to only modify "stock" tune would work for me....even though in all reality, it's no different than other ways of slowing the car down a little imho....i mean, does "cheating" via the pcm make it more ok than a screw in the throttle linkage? i really don't think so.

it still will come down to car's overall consistency, and driver's skills on the starting line

how is tuning cheating? would it be cheating if a guy with a carb change timing or jets between rounds?

i don't see what is so impossible about changing one little part of your tune, the cost of those shitty handheld tuners is almost as much as getting set up to do actual tuning.

regardless of how good your tuning guy is, he can't be everywhere and take care of everything. learning how to help yourself does come in pretty handy sometimes, this is one of those times.

no more so than electronically changing a shift point, or manually adjusting a screw on the throttle body imho....same thing if neither breaks any rules.

with only 1 finger to type with, i can't keep going back and forth about our opinion differences...

thanks for the replies....time for a nap

Tuning the car to slow it down is not cheating, (like re-jetting a carb like that other guy said) but putting a device like 5.3LJimmy suggested is. My buddy John (Lilslo1) had his car literally torn apart by the NMCA officials because he was consistent and winning rounds in NMCA, and people thought he was hiding weight and using some sort of throttle stop. After the inspection he came away clean as can be. I would try the Predator or another electronic device. Anything you manually put on the car to slow it down wll not be allowed. NMCA or any other class.

Restrictor plate sounds good too. I don't know what the car will do if you richen up the AF with the MAF T, I recall a friend borrowing one from me like 7 years ago and he picked up a 1/2 tenth leaning his out. So maybe I'm think you could slow down a tenth before you start running too rich. Try it at and see.

that was the original plan and reason for post john...

i can borrow it for free and see if it works "good enough" for what i need.

it'd only be for a half dozen races, so i want something that is easily reversed, or removed.

now if my recent suspension mods & upcoming re-tune for the ls6 intake and new single in/out catback get me a few tenths quicker, i'll be in fine shape since i could just run the 11.50 class instead of 12.0 class.

i just figured murphy's law would prevent that and it'd be easier to slow down than to quicken up.

i'm not sure how i'd be able to use a restrictor plate....any ideas?
