I went 17" on mine, but I relocated the LCA's and moved the shocks in 1", if you have to use the stock mounting point there isn't any reason to go past 16" from the frame to fender.
Here is a couple old photos of mine. I had almost 6" of room on the inside of the 275 60 15, a 315 on a 12" rim would fit easy plus room, the lca and panhard rod mount will be the places you need to look at for more clearance. Also if you plan to run a 30" tire 315-60-15 don't use a 36" mini tub, you can't lower the car for ****, go with a 40" tub all the way up to the bottom of the hatch.
With a 40" tub you can see in the last photo, you can cover the entire area from the floor to the rear hatch area in one single piece if you tilt the tub forward some. I also used aluminum tubs top save weight, with what I cut out I also removed 90 total pounds.
