Default thinking of going th400

just cant decide if i want to make the final move to race car or not.

pros:
killer 60 foots
more consistant runs
less chance of parts breakage
cons:
not very streetable
no more 1500 rpm's at 65 mph
no more shifting gears

any m6 guys do this and if so, what are your thoughts.

i am thinking once the directport is in and i shed a little more weight from the car, theres a chance i might run some very low 10's if not get into the 9's.

just trying to see if others have had the same delima

I just converted from M6 to TH400 after grenading a 12 bolt and T56 in one swipe. The TH400 loves the street so far, it's a blast! It wails like a pig on the freeway, no overdrive and 3.73's bring the R's up a bit. Manual valve body = all the fun of a stick shift plus all the benefits of the Auto!!

I never thought I'd be proud to own an automatic, but it's been very cool so far (only a week, I'm sure my excitement will come down).

I currently have an M6 with big cubes and dirct port on the way. I'm not sure what I will do when my tranny goes down. After weighing all the options I like the thoughts of the Jerico like Judson runs. It's pricey but compared to a T400 with overdrive it's pretty comparable. My car sees too much street driving to be without overdrive.

Evil I just installed a TH400 in my H/C car with a reverse valve body and a brake it was the best thing I ever bought. I have 4.10's out back and it's only at about 3200 rpms on the highway. I say go for it.

Evil, its up to you. I just wouldnt be able to handle taching those rpms at 60 on the street. The car no matter what will not be as streetable like she is now. This is just me, but i got my car to drive hours here and there and have plenty of power at the same time. I know I couldnt stand taching 3000+ at 60mph

good luck buddie... just dont complain about a cookout being to far if you do make the swap. :-p LMAO

Brian if you go with a 400 give me first shot at your T56. A spare would be nice.

its just so tempting. be able to go to the track and beat on the car and not have to worry about a clutch, shift forks, syncro's, etc...

hd, the cookout aint too far for the 2500hd, and if i need to take the car anywhere far, thats why i got the truck and trailer for.

i would just hate to have the t56 go out and take my dennys drive shaft and possibly 12 bolt out at the same time! that would SUCK!

maybe i will just get fockers t56 that hes selling and have it built like tanners and swap them out. damn race cars!!!!!

I love these posts about how 'unstreetable' a non-overdrive tranny is.

You guys would NEVER be able to tolerate an old muscle car, eh? Wusses.

Crap, GM didn't put OD in to F-bodies until third gens. What do you think first and second gen owners did, just not drive on the freeway? Not go over 55 becuase they didn't like the noise?

My 79Z came from the factory with the 4-speed (no OD) and 3.73 gears. NO problem on the freeway there.

Just a friendly stirring of the pot.

Brian, it is great not having to worry about clutches, launching and spinning, shifting, etc. Also, I drove my car from MD to TX with the th400 with the 3.42 gears. Now I have 4.11's in. The 3.42's weren't bad at all but the 4.11's would have gotten annoying driving that far. But it's great not worrying about synchros and such. And the transbrake is awsome!!

Andrew, i drive tractors and old 454 ton trucks everyday that only have 3 gears and tach about 4k at 50 LMAO, if they even hit that speed that is. Im just basing my opinion on a few TH400 cars I know of that claim its hard for them to drive over an hour. Its all in what you personal think streetable is and isnt. Its just my opinion that a car that was 100% streetable isnt but maybe 45% streetable after that TH400 goes in. I mean 3500rpms at 60 is a little ways from 1600 isnt it?

Evil just wants to be part auto thats all I knew he would ditch that M6 sooner or later LMAO.

But again, if you think its streetable than it is. Its all in the eyes of the owner/driver

Evil, you got a truck and trailor now so go for it buddie:-p Im still gonna kick your **** at MIR. Even with that 400shot you got LMAO

M6 originally, then went to TH-400.

Now I'm running a PowerGlide.

TH-400 not streetable? It was just fine for me.

Spool'n and Glide'n my car on the street
and 9's at the track.
(and to think, I hesitated)

Ran the TH350 with 4.10s, but it screamed on the highway. It is definitely streetable though, and I had a 4000 stall. My new setup will be TH400 with similar stall, but will see much less street time.

Why don't more people go for the 4L80E?

I'm at this cross road too, I have a 434 on the way (be ready ih October) and I know it's gunna toast the 4L60E in no time.
I love overdrive, not only does it save on fuel, it keeps the wear and tear (in particular valve springs) to a minimum.

I think the biggest issue for me is physical size...it wont fit with out tunnel mods, the weight isn't an issue I'll have plenty of horse power

Doing 3000 orso rpm's down the highway is soo 80's.

TH400 not streetable???? Some people need to change to a better brand of crack!

No, I probley wont be driving my car to Las Vegas from Omaha ever again. SO WHAT! Have trailer will travel if need be. Pop that button and watch the horizon sink below the hood. Just run a big cooler with a good fan on a manual switch.

I have a pickup truck for driving down the highway, and a trailor if I need to take the car a long way, so don't need an overdrive.

Just buy my lockup TH350 setup, and run 3.23s out back. Very easy on the street!

I went the TH400/Gear Vendor overdrive route. I am still working on some other parts of the car so I haven't gotten a chance to drive it around, but the car should keep a lot of its streetability

I should have a little more to add to this in about 2 weeks when the car is finished and I get to actually drive it again after 6 months!

The install of the GV unit itself was pretty simple, so you might want to try going with the TH400 by itself first and then installing the GV unit if you decide that you really miss having an overdrive.
