Default 230" dragster with LS1

I just bought a 230" dragster and I had either a 454 or an LS1 to install...I decided on the LS1 just to be different. I hope I'm not laughed of the track!

I went with the edelbrock vic jr. EFI manifold and a Holley 1000cfm Throttle Body to try and retain some of the traditional looks. Costs the same as a fast90/90 setup plus I feel it will perform better. I'm going to try and get it working with EFI live and MAP, ditching the MAF. I also have Precison Race Components Stg 2.5 5.3L Heads and the Magic Stick 3.

DD2000 thinks it will run 8.90's at out high altitude. Not a monster but it should be fun for my wife.

Any suggestion on how to make the engine look better?

Relocate the coils and do some custom wires, then put on some sweet valve covers. Much like this guy did.

That sounds awesome to me!! I'd powdercoat the intake manifold and get a set of the GM Bowtie LS1 valve covers and have them powdercoated to match. Then relocate the coils...

Sweet, wonder why someone hasn't done that engine in a rail yet. Keep us posted on how it runs!

Im putting a stock LS2 with nitrous in a 240" dragster right now. I am just waiting on some parts for the glide and the headers. I am using a modified camaro harness with the transmission stuff removed.

It will be differnt to have a dragster you can let sit and idle in the staging lanes all day and not have to work on it.

I had considered this myself a few years ago... best part is it will run on pump gas! I think itd be cooler the more technical and factory it looks. Would be awesome to see an ls1 just hanging out on a dragster! I bet it would move... Those things weigh what 1600#s? Most dragsters dont have big hp motors in em, I dont see why an LS1 couldnt stomp all over traditional sbcs and bbcs and be way more consistent doing it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking maybe a coil relocation kit and attach it under the headers on the frame rails. They will be hidden from site and the wires will just come up from below. Then a set of fabricated valve covers along with the vic jr and throttle body it should look better.

It should weigh 1550 with the LS1 and driver. It was 1450 with a traditional small block and I figure the LS1 should be 40-50 pounds lighter. DD2000 says 8.50 with the head/cam package at 6500 feet. I hate to get my hopes up but we'll see in two weeks!

Yes it will be cool to run pump gas! I wonder how many runs we'll get per gallon. I built a 632 for my wifes vette that was fuel injected and we got 3 runs per gallon while running 8.60's! What 5-6 runs per gallon?!

Our dragster has a 598 BB that makes about 900hp N/A and about 1300 on spray. On the motor it should run 7.50s. It also weighs about 2,000 with the driver. With about 700hp you should run consistent 8s all day. Ive always wanted to put an LSX in a dragster. Good luck

Have you weighed it without the motor and trans? I weighed mine with no motor or trans and it weighed 663lbs with the big *** wing on it that I took off now. It also still had all the electronics still in which I also took out.

I just talked to the chassis builder and he said with a 200# driver and small block it weighs 1530#. I really dont know how much an LS1 weighs compared to a SBC but if it's 50#'s less and my wifes weighs 130# then it should weigh in around 1410#. I've never been involved in dragsters so I have no idea if this is all wrong but if it really weighs that little this is going to fly!

Its true to a point. What he should have said is you don't need a lot of power to go fast with a dragster. Aero and weight mainly. LSX should be plenty fast!
I just sold my dragster a while back. 245in mike bos w/ a flat top 406 in it that might have made 450hp. went 860s @ 150 and 5.40s in the 1/8.

I'm thinking 450 @ the crank on your engine should be stupid easy, so yes, mid 8s should be no problem.

But after you get into low 5s in the 1/8, or mid to low 8s in the 1/4 you hit that wall where you need a LOT more power to go a LITTLE faster.

With the head/cam package I "think" they said 550-575HP, should be fun. I suppose there is a barrier like door cars. It sure is cheaper thena door car!
