Default Which DOT tires for big wheelies?

I'm not able to get on here as much anymore now that I have a new job. I've tried the search and I'm still not sure.

My sig pic below was from last year leaving at 5,000 with the two step off. I was using 28x9x15 MT ET Drags on 15x7.5 Convo Pros with tubes. This year I switched to 28x11.5x15 Hoosier QTPs on 15x8.5 Convo Pros with tubes. They can only hold a t-brake launch with the two step set at 3600. Anything higher and I spin. I have my front suspension as loose and as high as possible. I have tried my rear shocks as firm as 9 and as loose as 3. These tires seem like they don't like to be hit hard even with excellent track prep.

I'm thinking about switching to MT ET Street Radials without tubes because I have read many times on here they like to be hit hard. Are they still considered the best DOT tires available or just the best radials available? I'm wanting something to hold a 5000 rpm t-brake launch. Car weighs 3310 with me in it and makes 440/400 rwhp/rwtq and runs 10.30s @ 129 in good weather and 10.50s @ 126 in the heat of summer. I'm thinking about buying a new set of wheels too, ideal for the tire size I'm about to buy. For example the 325/50/15 MT ET Street Radials on 15x10 Convo Pros or would the 275/60/15 tires work just as well on my 15x8.5 wheels?

Any other suggestions?

I would recommend the biggest MT DR that you can run..... most easily would be the 325/50/15 DR.. I run em on 15x10's and they hoook like a ****.... I've run 1.50 60' on them on motor and soon i'm going to run a bunch of spray on them.....

I put my rears on 8 and thought I snapped the torque arm leaving at 4000 rpms...

that launch pic iin your sig is ON MOTOR?!?!?!? holy crap... what gears????

M/T ET Street RADIALS hands down. I've used all 3. MT 27x10.50 ET Streets (cheater slicks) first......hated them. MT 275/60/15 ET Street Radials next....LOVED THEM! Consistant low 1.40 60' times, with a best of 1.37. This is on a stock LS1 car, almost full weight, with a cam and a 150 shot. After they wore out I bought a pair of MT 28x10.50 stiff sidewall ET Drags. They're okay, but I still can't cut the 60's I was cuttin' on the radials.

the smaller radials dont like the trans brake unless you really have your suspension dialed in. now on the 295 or 315, it wont matter.

Gator, I'm talking about the 325/50/R15 tires, which are only 28" tall. A 30" tire is too much for me right now and I also wouldn't even be able to fit them.

OutlawZ, my car is all motor no spray yet. Making just under 440 rwhp and raceweight of 3310. That pass was only 10.5 @ 125 with a 1.52 sixty foot on the back tires. I was using very narrow slicks that were only 27.3" tall. They were the MT ET Drags 28 x 9 x 15 on 15 x 7.5 wheels with tubes and drilled to the rims. I carried the wheelie 120 feet and set it down about as softly as possible. I'll send you the link to the vid if you'd like. I left straight off the t-brake at 5,000. My car has a TH350 with a 8" ATI converter, 4.10 gears.

Am I being foolish for thinking I can leave at 5,000 off the t-brake on radials in a 3310 car? I just figured if I could do that on very narrow slicks then I should be able to do it on taller and wider DOT tires.

Veteran NMCA racers regard the MT 325's as being slicks with grooves cut in them, which is their way of saying that these tires hook great.

I've gone 1.35 on the 325's after just trying them 2x, so If I could do that I'm sure someone who spends more time with them can do even better.

I wouldn't want to wheely like that but other than that I'm sure you'll get there.

My 325s love the transbrake, I have a busted oil pan, trans case, and engine block to prove it.

i went 1.39 60' the one and only time i went off the transbrake. i have a big converter on the jug. now i am building a stronger motor and anticipate better 60' times. i went 1.37 60' on the footbrake though. i ran the 325 radial as well but at 3600 lbs.

The MT radials love the trans-brake. My 275/60's stuck just as good off the t-brake, if not better, than my 28x10.50S's I have now...and that was with 515 to the wheels through a stalled TH400. I will definately be going to a 325/50 radial after my 28x10.50S's are done.

I have hit my 325s with 4,400 on the brake. the harder I hit them the higher the front end rises

right now i am hitting them at 4,000 out of the hole N/A off the brake and consistant 1.4x times about a foot in the air.

Almost afraid to hit them with juice

yeah pewter send me the link to that video. That's friggin awesome.... I run the same thing NA (10.62@127) and my car yanks tires but not like that! Thank god.... Then again my cam is a lazy cam for NA runs as it's a 114.5 LSA and specifically designed for spray. Plus my gears are tailored for about a 300hp hit..... they're 3.89's and with my shift point i'll be able to run about 153-155 before i run out of gear....

You also have alot more stall than I do if you're leaving at 5K. I leave at 4K off of a digital 7 built in 2 step..... what gears do you have in that thing???

I will have some nitrous results with these 325/50's in a few weeks or so... I'm thinking if I can go 1.50 on motor, I should be in the 1.35 area on the 150-200 shot.....

I think I'm convinced to go with the 325/50/R15 ET Street Radials. I assume a 10" wheel would be perfect?

Guys I'm not looking to do this every time, I just want to be able to again. I had a chance to do a big wheel stand at Pinks All Out last weekend but my tires wouldn't hold the high rpm launch and I just spun badly instead. I knew they weren't going to pick 10.50 cars so I went for a big wheelie my second pass. Oh well, I tried.

gotta be a reason why it wheelstands like that with that kinda hp on motor only...... hell i made 473 RWHP and mine don't wheelstand like that....

might be your stallspeed you're able to leave at as well....

that thing is crazy....

Outlaw, read post #5 again. You missed where I said 4.10 gears. So 4.10 gears, ATI 8" 5000 converter, 27.3" slicks, regular 1st gear ratio for TH350 (can't remember the number right now, not the low first gear, the other one), 3310 lbs raceweight, front shocks set on 2, springs raised high, and believe it or not I was wrong about the horsepower. I was actually only making 433/400 at the time of that wheelie. I got a new cam a week later and that brought my numbers up to about 445/402 for the next event where I ran 10.2 @ 130. I would have traded that wheelie last year for a nice one at Pinks last weekend. There were some decent wheelies but I didn't see a single competitor carry it past the 60 foot markers.

Now I need to start calling some sponsors to see if they have the 325/50/R15 ET Street Radials in stock. Next race is a week from Friday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Sick....... For my car to wheelie like that on motor i'd probably need like a 4.30 or 4.56 gear.....

i'm going thru the traps in 3rd like 1000rpm's before my rev limit so i have the room.... but who cares i'm spraying it next time I go to the track and i should have some nasty wheelie vids...

Too bad you couldn't get it up there on pinks though..... i'm trying to set my car up to run hard and wheelie as well for pinks all out in california for september......

he pm'd it to me..... crazy video......

big props to you for not getting scared, staying in it and riding it out versus lifting and letting that thing smash into the pavement.

I saw the SYA bars under there... how'd they fare in the impact???? Mine as scraped a bit but nothing other than a lil road rash...

I had the same problem at pinks, due to a junk track that a motor home would not hook.
I do have to agree with you, Being able to do 100 plus foot wheelies is cool, especially when the car doesnt look too far from stock.
