Failed my chassis certifcation today....
Also, I don't have the "D" bars as he put it, those are the bars that run from the main hooop angled downwards to the tunnel. I think if I would have had those bars he would have passed me. Anyway, that's going to be my fix; install the "D" bars.
Now I have to tow to Montgomery next month so he can look it over and give me that precious little sticker that certifies the car to 7.50.
FWIW, I asked him about the t-top deal and he said that next year, t-top cars would be considered convertibles.. I'm just repeating what he said. His name is Mike Welles
Also, next year the 9.99 to 7.50 certification is going to be changed to 9.99 to 8.50. That's a big jump, but he said really it's just going to be adding some more bars to the cage (funny car cage type deal)..

FULL frame cars require the bars to extend through the body and be welded to the frame.
Unibody cars require all points to be welded to 6x6x0.125 plates that are welded to the unibody.
Am i missing something??
but my question is, isnt your main hoop attached to plates ON the subframe already though? and hes saying you need to run these bars to the floorpan? sounds likes hes got things backwards.
also as others stated, the 2003 book states that "On unibody cars with stock floor and firewall (wheel tubs permitted). the roll cage may be bolted or welded to the floor/rocker box via 6-inch x 6-inch x .125-inch steel plates"
sounds like you should leave the car how it is and make a drive to a different inspector, as well as contact his superior at the NHRA to report this
This is a pic of the passenger side:
Here is a pic from the rear:
He wants the D bars welded in right above the rear frame rails.. The rear frame rails actually taper off to nearly nothing at the point where he wants the bars welded. Like this (except not purple):
I'm just going to weld the bars in the car, it's not a big deal. I've got to weld the window net in anyways.. The big bummer is I have to travel to get the cage certified..

On my car, The NHRA Division 6 Director came to the shop, and put the tag on w/o even really looking at the car, but when its sitting in Brad Hadman's shop, he knows he doesn't have to.

If you go up a level you'll get a page with all of the pics. I'm working on adding the rest of the cage done up soon.
I have the d-bars and they went to the rear subframe area of the backseat roughly in the middle of where the back seat bottom half was. We located where the rear frame attached to the unibody and welded plates and put them there.
I had no problems getting my cage certified by the NHRA guy in the Indy area.
Id say take it to someone else in your Divisional area. Sounds like this guy misinterpretted the rulebook somehow.
