Default TSP231/237 Cam Dyno Results (Various Things To See)

"Various Things to See," because I learned a lot from one day of tuning and dyno while at two different performance shops.

So, I take the car with the TSP231/237 cam to:

Performance Shop #1:
--------------------
Pristine Facility, Proper ventilation (for both intake and exhaust), LS1Edit on Wide Band, MUSTANG DYNO.
Result: Max Power: 418.3 @ 6250 RPM / Max Torque: 392.8 @ 5000 RPM
Comments: I'm suspicious of high numbers from Mustang Dyno. Tuning wise, the session was great.
FYI: Numbers with cutout closed: 394.5rwhp @ 6250 RPM / 371.0 @ 3750 RPM
I'm losing a whopping 23.8 HP to my muffler (plus I still have 2.75" I-pipe and over axle pipe, everything else is 3"). Also, check out the huge difference in where max torque occurs.

So, I stop at my former place of employement to "show off" the car to my buddies, and while the hood is open, we notice the V-Belt is creeping forward off the belt tensioner. DOH, so I head off to Performance Shop #2 (the only people I trust in town for mechanical repairs) after getting the belt back on. I later found out that the crank pulley I installed was coming loose slowly. So while @ performance shop # 2, I ask them to strap the car on the dyno to test my suspicions regarding the high numbers from the morning session.

Performance Shop #2:
--------------------
Poor Ventilation (no fans), Dynojet Dynamometer.
Result: Max Power: SAE corrected, 385.1 rwhp @ 6250 (yes, with cutout open). Uncorrected reading was 397.
Comment: In reality, this is more like what the car feels like. I know I don't have a 420rwhp car by the seat of my pants.

Wrap Up:
So, IMHO, the car is somewhere between the two numbers. I'd say it's around 397rwhp.
Also, my previous Hammer Cam Number of 389 was from Shop#1, so that number was ficticiously high (my track times confirmed that).
I'm really happy with the TSP Cam. It feels really strong, it's torque curve is damn flat, and it sounds really wicked.

Sorry for such a long post, but I thought some of you would like to know a few details.

Interesting post, very good info.

I have always suspected poor ventilation could rob some power.

There was a good article in my latest gmhtp about slp and their new dyno facility. It has a ton of stuff in it that the dyno I use wouldn't even dream of having.

With that much potential margin in dyno numbers from shop to shop, no wonder there is always debates about dyno numbers on this board, and elsewhere for that matter.

I think this also goes to show how much a good set of Stage II heads will open this cam up

Exactly.. get a set of heads and you will be surprised how insanely hard this cam will pull!! Mine seems like it will never stop pulling.

Exactly again. This is the plan. This cam needs air (well, all cams need air, but this one is waiting for more, its potential is untapped).

During lunch, I passed by a local Perfromance Parts retailer to buy some shift light pills. The salesman asked me about the car and we got to talking about the events of yesterdays dyno runs. He confirmed that Shop#2 is is usually down on its readings due to the poor ventilation, but agreed that the Mustang Dyno run of 418 is ridiculously optimistic.
In his words, he told me "I wouldn't hesitate to say you're runnin' a clean 400 at the wheels."

I'll stick with the "Just Shy of 400" in my sig.

Track times in 3 weeks.

Yea I got about the same numbers has you. 401 hp 367 TQ. I can't wait to get a reel y-pipe and some heads. I have the stock 2.5 flp y-pipe know so I know a custom 3" y-pipe should give me a couple ponies.

I can't here in Maryland. You have to have tailpipes out the back and if I got duals I would just dump them under the car.

I'm looking at getting this cam so your post is good reading for me. What springs are you running? Are you running the stock rockers or did you have clearence problems? Did you have to fly cut the pistons? Lastly, does the cam and tuning have any quirks as far as drivability is concerned?

Nice #,s. I THINK I may have seen your car at an autocross some months ago at Metro Zoo?
I am her in S. Miami and would like to check your car out sometime. I am waiting on my headers and I will be installing a T1 cam. I am getting Macs for ground clearance.
Thanks for the vid, great motivation for my car.

-Comp 918's (TSP says these will do, I already had them in the engine for a previous cam).
-Stock rockers
-Stock pistons, no flycutting
-Only quirk is that the car shakes and people look at you (I'm fine with that one), but definately get a steep gear (4.10) back there to help the cam out for stopngo traffic.

Talking about gears I am about to go with a simular TSP cam, I have a 2001 Vette and was wanting to keep the stock gears. I am going with the LS6 heads and a very simular cam currently I have TEA heads and a 224-581 112ls cam and have no problems with the stock gears. The car is a 6-speed

its called calibration. if the machine isnt accurately set of coarse the numbers would be scewed. like dialing in a scale....you can magically lose or gain ten pounds with a turn of a wheel. we are all human and some humans just dont care to spend the time to do things right. we all get lazy in some regards. maybey they only calibrate it every six months instead off every day? or they set it to dyno high to get the ignorant people to keep coming back for impressive numbers. you have the right idea though take an average. some people wouldnt even post the second dyno #'s just to have more bragging rights. i myself am looking into a cam but with all the searches and all the different numbers its hard to make a good decision.(not to many speed shops around me unless your older sbc or a piece of rice. hope to hear more info after you put some heads on that beast!
