Those are bad *** numbers for a cam-only LS2. I got a bunch of **** for posting my 480/453 cam-only numbers in my Goat. That was with a ported FAST 92 and 1.75" headers. I bet that Vette hauls ***!

If that is directed towards me, I'm not cam only any more. My oil pump gave up the ghost, and SNL built me a forged LQ9 heads/ cam motor.

The 480/453 numbers were with a completly stock long block, a cam, and full bolt-ons.

Wow, the results of that combo are nothing short of amazing. Truly impressive!

Patrick: Why do you think this combination required so little ignition timing?

yeah that is impressive, i was also wondering about the timming it seemed low to me, why is this ? this is why i will be going to pat when cam time comes...

Very nice but when are you adding cylinder heads?

Because the lower timing is what helped this combo make more power. We spent 8 hours on the dyno just doing WOT tuning. The first pull with much higher timing was 487rwhp. Many people would have called it good, but Robert was very patient and allowed us to explore every tuning avenue for power.

I'm trying to understand WHY less ignition advance made more power here.

Please see post number 51. We tried more timing. In this case, it made less power. This is why it pays to keep try new things.

I should have been more specific with my question. I tuned a C5 with a TR224 cam,LG longtubes, etc. This engine made best power around 29* of ignition advance. Why it made best power there I am not really sure..

An AFR 205 equipped car with a TR224 cam and similar bolt ons to the C5 that I mentioned used less ignition advance, around 26* if I recall, for max power than the stock headed vette.

I automatically assumed the AFR combustion chamber was the reason for this.I assumed the L92 style heads required more ignition timing than the cathedral port style because they lacked swirl and tumble or velocity.

Seeing the low timing required on the car you worked on and the fact that it has stock heads makes me wonder what has the greatest impact on the timing required for max power.

Maybe I should ask this in the advanced engineering section instead of cluttering this thread?

You are trying to burn the air fuel mixture at the exact moment in the combustion process that creates the highest cylinder pressure. The more air / fuel you have in a cylinder the less amount of time it takes to complete the burn at the theoritical 12-14 degrees ATDC. A lot of it has to do with the efficiency of the combustion chamber in the 243 heads. Patrick, did you find peak torque around 12.5 afr and peak hp around 12.8-13.2 afr?? That has been my personal findings. Great results.

Yes, we got best power with 12.8:1 from 2000-4400 rpm, then 12.5:1 from 4400-5200 rpm (peak torque window), then 12.8:1 from 5200 rpm and up. The motor made the same power with 13.0:1 at peak power, but it had a tendency to knock. The knock sensors were happier at 12.8:1 A/F ratio at peak power.

Definitely. This is a great nitrous cam profile (wide split with early exhaust valve opening point). I'm not sure if Robert wants to test the limits with N2O or if he'd rather just beat on it on the road course.
