How long should a dyno tune take?
How long should a dyno tune take? Hey everyone . Just had a tune done on my cam only trans am. I feel it could def use more tuning. I'd say it took him about 40 mins maybe from start to finish to tune it. Does this seem way shorter than average ?
It's a 228r cam 110 lsa. Full bolt ons minus ud pulley. Made 385rwhp and 378rwtq

My old tuner did three pulls with ab five-ten mins in-between. all his tunes are pretty spot on. For the time spent I doubt many could get as close but there was definitely room for improvement.
I'm guessing your car is a manual?
You go to Brett or someone else? He didn't spend a lot of time on mine either, but it was better than the previous tune I had. Still has some idle hunt issues coming to a stop and fuel trims hang around 10%.
WOT is spot on though (at least if his wideband is correct).
Mine only made 365ish rwhp the first time, 350rwhp the second time but that's an unlocked automatic with a 12bolt, drag radials, chromoly steel driveshaft.
I'm going to learn to do it myself. I have EFI live and just bought a lc-1.

Yes Brett. I mean the tune doesn't feel horrible but I just thought it make a little more hp and hardly buck if any at all. I would love to get efi live but it is expensive ! Lol

fwiw a friend of mine basically had his car tuned in 2 stages (purposely) due to time constraints. first time was for driveability and a "safe" wot tune. 2nd time was for power. both done on the street, no dyno. the car drove great and was "safe" a/f & timingwise, but no time had been spent on it. full weight cam only stalled automagic car went 107 1st time w just driveability but picked up 9 mph after the second tune. this setup also has 30k miles on it and who knows how many track passes.
moral of the story...just because the car starts/drives good doesn't mean it is making the power it should. the car drove and idled the same after the final tune, but obviously made another 100hp or so.

42/21 for that cam sounds pretty damn good to me. As far as driveability though unless he actually drove it on the street i doubt its tuned to its full potential in the driveability category. cant duplicate the loads the car sees on the street on a dyno, even a mustang dyno.
Like I said the highest my car hit was high 360s, but everyone keeps saying my track speeds are pretty good so I don't worry about it much. Try to get to the track and get a trap speed.
I have someone on here tune my car, I would say 3-4 hours to do it correctly including street time and dyno time. He does as many pulls as necessary to get it right and safe.
I was asking if you got a run before he tuned it with the new cam? Do you have back to back dyno runs from the same day showing what your car was doing before he tuned it with the new cam and the after tune run? That would show you what the tune actually did for you at WOT.
I agree with the brett kinda in a hurry part. I had him change spark plugs with ngk tr55 and msd wires, had severe misfire few days later, he helped me fix the problem but when I say take ur time man I'm not in a hurry, his reply was "yea but I am" wtf lol..
He's a good guy though, this is the first time I ever had a mechanic or a performance shop done something to my car (dyno tune and then clutch) fwiw, he knows what he's doing and seem pretty knowledgeable abt it.
I don't mean to hijack your thread op but what do u think abt msd 8.5mm wires? He installed mine and says they are crappy, and the cause of the misfire was because cylinder 8 wire was touching the headers caused one fuse to blown hence the misfire

With my 228/232 cam, it took me about 4 or 5 trips leaving my car over night each time to get to where my car is now.. also a couple times I took it to him where he hooked up the lap top and made some changes as to how I drive. No bucking and hesitaion..

Couple months later added 42# injectors, 85mm MAF/Lid got me to 419/382..
Car was dynoed on the same Mustang dyno with the same tuner
My tuner takes about 2 hours, maybe a little more for the first tune. He doesnt just throw in a tune, and make some pulls. He tunes it from idle on up. He took about 2 hours to tune our lid/catback/gears WS6, and let me tell you, the driveability was a complete night and day difference!!
