Interesting that you should ask,

My knee jerk response to anybody that wanted to simply add a turbo to their 4.8/5.3/6.0L is to become familiar with "sloppy" guides
https://sites.google.com/site/sloppywiki/

and watch all the videos
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY6...W64gSx_x0lbCdw

And then re-approach the issue with that prior knowledge of what parts will be necessary to achieve what goals you have in mind,
there is likely a selection of manifolds awaiting you out there but first look at the various configurations to see which might be preferable, some keep A/C low, some keep it high, some relocate this or that. Plug and play doesn't always mean keeping your existing accessories. There is often quite a bit of fitment/fabrication involved, unexpected issues are possible. So the more research, pictures and details you can dig up the better.

There are many LS1tech members here more experienced when it comes to fitment, construction, available parts, etc...
Hopefully some will add details soon to further assist your quest
I am merely the turbo-engine expert, not an "LS" specific expert, I can apply universal knowledge about combustion engines but know nothing specific about the colors and variety of parts available beyond what you see in general online guides such as those.

For example,

LY6 6.0L video
950rwhp with unopened engine, just cam spring

Using stock exhaust manifolds which are essentially the worst possible flowing units I can think of pretty much,
provide good plug access and form fitment to the engine quite well, and seem sturdy, many have great success using mostly OEM parts

Cam spring?? Not being a smartass, just wondering which part you mean. No such thing as a cam spring...

Probably camshaft and valve spring. Sounds like it won't last long.

So I won't be the first to fit truck accessories and manifold under the the hood of a FGF? Oh well, thought I was going to be a pioneer.

Really shame the stock intake as good as they are, still hold back a 6.0L. I really wonder how great a job the tuner did. I do plan to upgrade to the later NBSS once I've got the stock running well, plus the Speed Engineering headers. Would be interested in hearing any dyno updates with your new setup.

Also, did your builder degree in the camshaft?

OP posted 1969 Firebird with LQ4 with truck intake manifold and a healthy cam falling short on power and rpm. And he's considering going to Speed Engineering headers and TBSS (essentially same as 5.3L NBSS intake setup). So yes, I'm sure.

TBSS intake is probably worth 10 hp from the stock intake. I still think he has another issue somewhere.

I agree. The GENIII truck intake should pull well past 5500rpm and still make more power. Performance-wise it's in between the LS1 and LS6 intake. Either the cam is over-advanced, the throttle body is not opening 100%, he's getting valve float, or something else. Throwing more parts at it isn't going to help until he figures out the root cause.

TB not opening all the way would be worth checking.

@gordoalf
  • Did you ever figure out why you were not making the power you should have with your original setup?
  • How did the TBSS intake setup fit under the hood? (I wouldn't mind some pics if you have them).
As for two possible suppliers for turbo setups, this is what I've found:
