Manual or Auto? the most efficent gear in a trans is 1 to 1 the imput shaft is locked to main shaft when you run a M6 car in a OD your pulling two sets of gears in the trans, imput and OD set.. when we could run OD's in our race trucks (stupid NASCAR) we would lose 20 to 25 to the wheels on the chassis dyno

m6 = 4th 1:1
a4 = 3rd 1:1 (or closes to it)

So when I have my A4 dynoed again it should be in D not OD for best results?

Yep. D is third. If you were in OD, to get to 6000 rpm, you would probably be doing 160 mph on the dyno to boot.

My first run for the A4 was in 2nd. The curve was close hp wise different tq number. After putting it into 3rd there was a 1:1 ratio and it dynoed more accurately. I tried to get both runs on the same dyno to compare.

I'm having a problem with this in my automatic (2002)... When I had my car dynoed, I put it to 3 (as opposed to 1, 2 or D). The guy told me to hold it at 2000 RPM and floor it when he started recording. The thing is, my car shifts from 3rd to 2nd when I floor it. I feel it, and it shows up as a huge gap in the graph. I don't have a hand held programmer or some tuning software, neither does the dyno operator. How would I get around this gear change?

Thanks,
somebody

For me I have to run it up to about 75 (2600rpm) and then floor it. It doesn't kick down at all. Now if I try it around 70 then yes. Best thing to do is take it out on the highway and find out where abouts it doesn't down shift into 2nd.

5 MPH steps up until it doesn't downshift. If you've got a 2.73 geared car you'll have to be around 85 MPH. In a 3.23 geared car its probably more like 75-80 MPH. My 3.42 geared car wont shift over 70 MPH. Just put it in 3rd (3 for Pontiac, D for Camaro), get up to speed, then go from there.

for my 3.23 gears, it was 72 mph with no downshift. with the 4.10 gears it's now about 55 ish. both were at 3200 rpms. 3000 rpms and it would downshift.

Awesome, thanks! I'll be sure to tell the gay operator this information, 'cause he sure as hell doesn't know anything about f-bodies. Taints.
