Default SPM & HPTuners Dyno Results

Since last time we dynoed only 400 rwhp and 460 rwtq with our restrictive LS6/stock throttle body, we decided to go all out on our intake setup. We ordered a GMPP carb intake and had it modified for EFI and ported for the heads, this thing looks better than pictures. We also got a 100 degree Wilson Manifolds 90mm elbow (modified to match the ported GMPP intake) to bolt up an Accufab 90mm 5.0L throttle body. After adjusting the injector table for the new 40lbs/hr injectors, we made our first pull. Ken of HPTuners started to dail in the AFR, after a couple of passes, we were happy with the results. We dynoed 451.2 rwhp @ 6220 rpms and 508.6 rwtq @ 3445 rpms! This is still on a 1998 stock short block (block, pistons, crank, rods) with about 90K miles. I should definately be in the 10s now! We are going out to our local race track (high elevation: 3500' DA) so I can get used to the new found power. Then on Thursday it is Super Chevy Show time and I should run even better numbers out there.

I will post up picture of our new intake system later ...

Here are the pictures of our new intake setup, as promised! Excuse the mess, I am going to get that intake tube painted black.

I will try and get the dyno sheet scanned, but the graph line is yellow and doesn't scan as good with the graph's white back ground ... I'll see what I can do.

The heads and cam are 241 stage IIs and a hydraulic 246/.600"/113 cam.

Very nice gains!

Every topic on these intakes has suggested that it's not worth doing on a N/A or n2o car. One guys said he only gained 7 hp. I'm wondering how yours differs.

- What angle are the injectors at?
- Is that the MAP sensor over on the drivers side of the elbow?
- SD tune? Were you running a mafless SD tune with your LS6 intake?
- Did you have a look at the plugs? Or try to read EGT's off the headers? (to check for distribution problems)
- The intake/elbow combo does completely clear the factory cowl with flange milled? Do you think if the motor itself sat 1/2" lower, the combo would fit untouched?

Once again, nice gains! This might open lots of eyes!

I don't know why people would say that, since it is a far better intake setup for all out racing. For street driving, it might be low on torque in the idle-3000 rpm range. Our differs from that 7hp gain example in the fact that we were running an LS6 intake with a stock unported 1998 throttle body. Thanks for the comments! I thought everyone's eyes were open to this intake, hence why I went this route.

What angle are the injectors at?
The injectors bosses were drilled at the same angle as OE, what ever that is/was.

Is that the MAP sensor over on the drivers side of the elbow?
To be honest, I wouldn't know ... it doesn't look like a MAP sensor to me.

SD tune?
Yes, the engine was tuned and runs on an SD Open Loop tune.

Were you running a mafless SD tune with your LS6 intake?
Yes, prior to the GMPP intake swap the engine was tuned (attempted) with an SD Open Loop tune.

Did you have a look at the plugs?
No, not yet but I plan to.

Or try to read EGT's off the headers? (to check for distribution problems)
Haven't had a chance to check for even fuel distribution ... that would mainly be a problem for FI applications using a sheet metal intake.

The intake/elbow combo does completely clear the factory cowl with flange milled?
I had the carb mount on the intake milled .25", the elbow base milled .3" and the top of the elbow milled to be parallel to the base without thin walling the casting. We still needed to trim the cowl area. Unmodified would require more modification to the cowl area.

Do you think if the motor itself sat 1/2" lower, the combo would fit untouched?
Nope, if it sat .5" forward it might. With some milling of the pieces or possibly grinding off the "Wilson Manifolds" logo, it might work if the engine sat .5" lower.

Very Nice the Single Plane really comes alive once you start going past 7000 RPMS.

um, is it me but what have you done to get so high a trq. number? It looks like a bi cube motor but i think your running stock displacement right? Does numbers look sweet and the intake setup looks almost at home...

i like it...

keep us posted, i would like to see wat else you can do....

Thanks! Too bad we can't take advantage of that kind of power band, I don't want to spin the OE bottom end past 7200 rpms. But when we get our new setup, we should be able to go past 7200 rpms.

Look above your post, it is a custom heads and cam package.

I really have no idea why the torque is higher than the hp, could be the tune. We have all the power robbing mods: TH400, 12-bolt, 8" non lock-up B&M converter. On a manual, those numbers would be even higher! I agree, the hp/tq graphs look like a stroker, but it is still a original 1998 short block.

Yeah, I was really surprised as well, especially the torque! Ken thought it was right on par for the setup. We wouldn't have been able to do it without your product, thanks!

Torque multiplication from the converter. In a stick car that torque number is probably closer to 400 @~5-5500 rpm.

The intake we got from Scoggin-Dickey (sponsor here) for $340 (plus shipping), the Wilson Manifolds 100 degree elbow for $160 and the Accufab 90mm Throttle Body was $225.

Yeah, it clear fine, just a little rub on the top of the elbow, but about another 1/8" off of the elbow or manifold and we would not have any rub. Thanks!

Were those numbers with the air intake tubing hooked up, or with the TB open, as in the pics?
