Default Think ALL Flowmaster mufflers lose power? Think again...

I rented some dyno time for a few tests today, one was to see how much power my single chamber flowmasters were robbing me. So I did a baseline with them on, then yanked em off for the next pull. The results were shocking to say the least! With no mufflers on my true duals and x-pipe setup, it picked up only 2rwhp, and the torque remained the same! So much for worrying about losing power to sound good

That's cool to take the time to test. Thanks!

That's pretty much the results I was expecting from a test like this. The different series might lose different amounts, but I don't think it's gonna be as much as the Flowmaster bashers make it out to be.

Flowmaster makes good mufflers IMO, except for their bolt on cat-back system(uses the stock y-pipe) they sell for fbody's. That's the one that sucks.

Don't most cat backs use the stock Y-pipe on these cars?

every ls1 i have seen picks up power from the first, second, and ultimately the highest dyno is the third pull.

how much time b/w the first and second pull? coolant temps effect them pretty big

Those aren't the Flowmasters that suck - I've run the single chambers on my car and had the same results as you...

The stock type crossflow Flowmaster is the one that sucks - have seen cars consistently pick up 20 to 25 rwhp with a cutout open on a crossflow Flowmaster... not just one, at least 8 or 10 cars...

The Flowmaster design is proven and it's known to make around the same power as an open pipe when you use the proper configuration. Dual Flows on an F-body make for a great sounding, great performing exhaust. But this does not apply to the Crossflow design that mimicks the stock F-body muffler. Those sound wonderful but their performance is a step down from most other performance catbacks. They give Flowmaster a bad name.

I agree. The 80 series is horrible but the one chambers are good mufflers. I have thinking about getting rid of my bullets for them

Catbacks can use the stock, ory, or catted Ys. This is a true dual setup however.

I have seen this as well. However, on this day, my car was making nearly identical numbers on un-changed pulls. I don't have the graph yet to see the times between. This pull with the mufflers off was the 4th pull.

Also guys, I understand that all the Flowmaster mufflers aren't poor performers. And yes, I DO know that the 80 series is the bad apple. I just did this test to see the results for myself, and to share with whoever might be interested, cause I have read, and have heard people say, that even these 10 series flows weren't gonna be as great in comparison to other choices by a significant margin.

Pretty damn loud! Not much difference, if any, vs no mufflers, or at least it didnt seem like it to me or the other guys that heard it. I have an idle and rev clip in my SIG.

So, are we concluding that the Flowmasters that flow don't muffle, and the Flowmasters that muffle don't flow?

I'm one of the guys that removed a 2-chamber Flowmaster (non-crossflow design) and picked up 45 rwhp on a 305 rwhp combo.

I like my Magnaflow because it's quiet and 700 rwhp car doesn't gain anything when I remove it. To me, THAT's impressive. It flow's AND muffles. I had good luck with SLP and the Aerochamber crossflow also. SpinTech sucks, though. +3 mph in the quarter when removing a single 3.5".

they might be loud but it is a pleasing sound compared to the old bullet muffler in each of the dual exhausts. i personally love dual single chambers with dumps in an ls1. it actually makes it sound nice.
