Friend's driveshaft let loose- although I have a feeling that it was the shop's fault (crappy workmanship).

Getting dyno tuned gives you LESS chance of all the things you mentioned above, of blowing up your engine. If you get a "canned" tune, it could be severely out to lunch and you would never know it, or no tune at all well obviously is no better, and youre obviously going to go WOT with the vehicle at some point, no?

Well being tuned on the dyno is no different. They strap it down, and slowly and carefully while monitoring your air fuel mixture take it up to where they feel is safe.

IMO most times when something like that happens on a dyno, its from either a terribly built engine, uneducated tuners or in this game, you gotta pay to play... sometimes big power is an unstable creature and things can and do go wrong.

Either way, I would say a dyno tune is your safest and best alternative if youre thinking of getting your car tuned or doing any mods to it.

Running a car, tuning a car on the dyno, is no more dangerous to the car than running it WOT on the street. Engines are mechanical pieces, and sometimes **** happens. Spinning a rod bearing is no fault of a tuners, or the dynos.
You run enough cars, tune enough cars, some are gonna break. I've seen broken pushrods, spun bearings, etc.
I've also seen people break connecting rods in half on the street. You build a high performance car, with the intent to beat the **** out of it, you're gonna break something eventually.
If it where only a matter of spending a ton of $$$ to assure you wouldnt blow up, the NASCAR boys would never have an engine failure. Right???

There are ways to minimize the risk. I saw a sb400 develop a severe rod knock on the dyno. The catch is it had a large cam and heads package installed on an otherwise totally unknown bottom end. It was putting down high 4xxrwtq on who knows what rod bolts. Another screw up involved a ford motor running a large direct port kit where the nitrous timing retard failed to activate. Knowing exactly what is in your motor and verifying that everything is working can go a long ways toward a safe dyno experience.

There is risk to every mod (usually). Keep in mind not to aimlessly mod because thats what your buddy is doing. Have a goal in mind, a budget in mind, a screwed on head about the whole ordeal. Otherwise, you will pay big money trying to clean up a stupid decsion or stupid mistake on the wrong item you didnt necessarily "need". Typically, you dont start running into blowing engines till you start either 1.) start beating on them like you stole it or like it owes you money.... or 2.) you have started going internally with the motor. Like somone has said here... the more power you have.. the harder it is to make it more dependable (now some people will take that out of context, but think about it). Remember in all of it, were all here because we love the car by either looks, or driving them point a to b... really damn fast...

Had one develop a rod knock and metal in the oil last night... hadn't even made a full pull on it. Owner said he had previous oil pressure problems and had to replace the lifters... so he wasn't surprised or too upset.

The dyno is no different than running the car wide open on the street or track. If there is a weak point in the setup, you will find it. I've seen driveshafts come apart (one nearly through the floorboards and caused me to need a change of underwear), clutches go up in smoke, and trannies go. But that is a very small number compared to the hundreds of cars I've tuned. When you start modifying engines/cars, anything can happen from the added stress and strain - but, if everything is well put together, it should be fine.

A good tuner will start off from idle and slowly work up the RPM range bringing the AFR in line before ever making WOT power pulls. If done correctly, dyno tuning is much safer than throwing a canned tune in the car and letting it rip...

I've had some blow up on me from mechanical failure. As said above it's the same or less stress on the dyno than the street. The benefit of a dyno is that you can push it without worrying about loosing control of the car.(like crashing on the street).

i had one blow up on me, a 540 b/b w/F2 procharger-made 905 rwhp on the
1st pull, then started smoking-i had put about 2k miles on it-i suspect the guy running the dyno bumped my retard switch and it wasnt on, tore the ring lands out of the pistons-i knew this motor was living on the edge anyway, so i wasnt to upset over it, lol

Mine lost a driveshaft on the dyno. Broke the DS,the transmission, broke the back off the block and bent the pinion in the diff. All of this at 3/4 throttle. Charlie @ Vengeance about **** his britches and a hell of a cleanup and rebuild ensued. I'm rocking the LSX now and happy as hell...........and broke.
