LS1 F-body vs. LT1 Corvette
#42
I had a very similar combo once...I had a '95 Corvette LT1 automatic (with 2.59 gears ) and when I needed a new daily driver I decided on a new 2000 Camaro Z28 automatic (with 3.23 gears) which I still have and LOVE to this day.
Had both cars together for about 3 years and with similar mods (thermostat, opened air box (lid on the LS1) and Hypertech their best ETs were almost dead even at the track in similar conditions.
Once the Z28 got more mods though there was no looking back, that car went right into the 12s (and later 11s) not long after.
Corvette LT1 - 13.20@105.47mph
Camaro Z28 - 13.20@107/108mph.

00 Z28 auto 3.23 13.3@104
so If they are even in the 1/4 with the same mods, I'm guessing it's due to more wheelspin and a worse 60-ft for the Z especially with those traps.
I doubt the Vette was totally stock then, from those speeds a 245-250hp L98 Vette is not stronger than a 300hp Mustang. At a stoplight I'm sure it's really close. I took an automatic Stang with my lightly modded Formula 350 pretty easy at a light, out on the highway it probably would have been a different story.

I messed with one a few times.
First time we were at a light side by side and he jumped a bit and got ahead and held it till about 60 then we let off.
Second time we were at the next light and I was behind him. He takes off like a bat out of hell on green and so do I. As soon as I hit second I change lanes and start to pass. By the time I hit third I had a car and am pulling slowly.
Third time is 60 roll. We went on 3 honks and probably launched perfectly. I heard both cars downshift at the same time. I put about 3+easy lengths on him @ 130. Not sure exactly how many because he was hard to see because the setting sun was in my mirror bad.
Definitely better race than stock 05+ gt mustang. Very close for me when I was completely stock.
His mods......at least exhaust
Mine............bone stock B4C 3:23 A4

The problem with stock LT1 A4 corvettes is the rearend gearing. But once the 2.59 rear is swapped for some 3.45s it is a totally different car.
Here's unbiased numbers from Mr. Mojo's cars as posted on CF
1995 Torch Red Coupe 6 speed

I had a buddy a few years back...I had a 2004 auto C5 and he had a 1996 auto C4...We went to the drag strip several times together...
My best 100% stock was a 13.5 at 100-103 ( strong auto C5 hitting 299 rwhp SAE)
His best 100% stock was a 13.9 at 97-100
The M6 LS1 Fbody's were running 13.6-13.9 at 99-103 mph dead stock
The auto LS1 Fbodies were running 13.8-14.1 at 97-100 mph dead stock
The point is that yes a stock LT1 C4 can defiently give a Fbody a run for it's money..My jaw dropped when I saw the 13.9 at 100 on the time slip, as that was very close to my 13.5 at 103...

last March I bought my bone stock 95 corvette automatic coupe (3.07 gears) I basically did a tuneup, magnaflow mufflers and a fairbanks servo and finally got the chance to run an automatic LS1 Trans Am and beat it both off the line to about 70 by over a car and out on the highway up to about 110 by about a car.
I also raced my own 98 WS6 vert several months ago with my cousin driving it and completely destroyed him but that was with a spun bearing and probably running on 6 cylinders....I'm gonna rematch him with him in the Vette this time as soon as my LS6 crate is finished being put in my WS6.
