97' 7.3 Powerstroke- To buy or not ?
I have the opportunity to buy a 97 ford powerstroke 7.3 for a good price. The only downfall is the mileage 175k. I'm a bit skeptical because of the mileage on the original automatic transmission. Do you guys have any input? In the pics the truck looks pretty clean. But then again they are just pictures I have yet to see it in person. This would be my tow rig and winter vehicle. Very limited use in the summer. Also I probably will put a max of 5,000 a year.

hmm, original tranny, wow it must be the only one in exsistance. those trucks ate transmissions like it was their job.
my uncle couldnt get more than 30k towing stuff before having to do a rebuild. i was going to buy the truck but i figured its a step backwards when the towing rig breaks down more than the car.
it would have to be damn cheap to consider and even then id have to really think about it. great engine, 175k isnt even broken in on that but the rest of the truck probably shows its age

every vehicle has its weak and strong points, from experience those transmissions have been known to be hurt from doing any towing. kinda like the 4l60e, it might get a bum rap but its usually well deserved

for 2500, id do it. at that price point if it lasts one season you got what you paid for. trannys arent that expensive about 1500 or so to rebuild but its just a pain in the butt, as is anything on a diesel truck but you'll find that out lol. just wanted to let you know since you will be hauling with it.
it just seems all the truck manufactors used gas trannies behind the diesel trucks since i know all 3 from that era have issues which is why they went to the alison transmissions later on. good luck

looks like good buy once you take all the pep boys crap off. but those trucks held up well other than the transmissions in those. one thing you have going is that it is a light truck with all heavy duty drivetrain under it so it never really had a work out all the time.
dual tanks too! you will prob fill it up once a summer lol
