Ran into a new Shelby GT500 tonight.
I was coming home from after our softball game and was just tired, and not looking to run anyway, but sometimes opportunities just present themselves.
So I was just cruising along doing about 60 in a 50 in the left lane, just passing traffic comfortably while he was sitting up my *** and kept playing with me.
So when an opening happend in the right lane, he jumped over and I heard the blower, so I dropped to third and we were on. I pulled a good 2 car length on him up to 100 and he let off at that point. I was happy and surprised a little. I think it surprised the Shelby owner as well as he stayed 10-15 cars behind me after our little run. I knew it was a new Shelby as it still had the paper license plate on the car.
So I was actually logging as I'm getting my VE table nailed down with the new 60's I put in, so I was able to review the 'run'. I went from 62 to 107mph in third gear in 4.3 seconds, which is 4320 to 6880 rpm. If nothing else, it's a good point of reference for future mods.

I can't wait.... I was thinking as he was f'ing with me, that I was the underdog here with a car that was 10 years older, and 'just' a heads cam setup vs. his supercharged, 500+ hp factory ride. I was already coming up with excuses to make myself feel better if I lost, but after I pulled on him, I was quite surprised, and I bet he was too.

Yes, 6880 rpm on a stock bottom end, but I know that once the blower goes on, the pistons are going to be ticking time bombs as well, so a rebuilt shortblock is in the future as well. Plenty of people run a lot more often at just as high if not higher rpms on stock bottom ends. Is it safe, maybe, is it recomended, probably not, but I don't track the car, so it sees above 6000rpm once in a blue moon. To be exact, it saw it once in the past 1000 miles or so.

I'm not a part of that stang-banger crowd, so please don't take this as I was trying to bash. Re-read my first post, the guy in his brand new shelby tried messing with me and I reacted. End of story. If you can say you've never done it, then fine, but don't preach like I was zooming in and out of traffic like a squid on a motorcycle during rush hour traffic.

I know that stretch of road its pretty desolate. Besides he only took it up to 107 on an empty road, I do 85 in a honda on my way to work, besides its not like he wound out 5th. Luckily there is still a time and still places for some tomfoolery. Nice run by the way OP reading it is not helping me avoid the mod bug though.
Sorry Dave, I didn't mean to upset anyone over this. I too am a father of two and rarely ever see more than 10mph over the speed limit. This was on a stretch of 202 in Jersey where there was no-one at 7:45 at night. If you're familiar with the road, it's between the PA border and Flemington where it's 2 lanes each way with a 50 feet divider. Did I go up to 107mph, yes, but it took just over 4 seconds, and according to my log, I was back doing 65 in another 15 seconds before I ever caught up with anyone else on the road.

Here's a satelite shot of the area, it's wide open major highway.

I really dont think I am the one that needs to get a grip...
So far the reasoning behind illegal street racing are;
Preface each one with "But officer"
1 The road is desolate (it is not)
2. I drive my Honda at 30-40 mph over the legal speed limit, why not 50-60??
3. At least I dont break the law like an import guy does...
4. It was just a small run..
Keep 'em coming see if we can get top ten reasons why....
Not preaching..I do my fast driving at the track in a controlled environment the way it should be.
I know anything I say will just be riduculed by those that partake in this activity. As has already been demonstrated by the responses. Just remember those cars you are flying by at 100+mph contain someones loved one, maybe mine.
I sure not one of you that are justifying this behavior would appreciate seeing a car fly by their wife or son or daughter at these speeds, I have and it is ridiculous.
Take your ride to the track to get the fix for speed, line it up with someone who knows they are in a race and let the beams decide.
