get the turbo one 34+mpg highway, tune and air filter will get you @300whp.
I have an 06ss/sc that I turbo'd and these motors take some abuse lol.
also built an 09 that did 481/481 whp/wtq on a stock motor at 34 psi with just meth injection and a gt3076r.
things can be nasty little sleepers when done right and still get amazing mpg, but only on 93 octane (or 91) I had to detune my car to run 89 and it still doesn't like it.
here a couple of quick vids of a few of the cobalts we've done
my car 2006 ss/sc t3/t4 60-1 turbo swap made 554whp at 30 psi on built motor, and did 444whp 410wtq stock motor on 23 psi (well it's back to stock now for my 150 mile daily commute lol)

2009 cobalt ss/tc gt3076r swap @30psi stock everything but turbo setup
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b27gO7uNwg

2007 cobalt ss/sc hp5857 turbo swap, 23psi 438whp stock motor, fuel pump. and most of the parts off my car
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx7memhzX-I&NR=1

2005 ss/sc gt3071r swap, 396whp 21psi stock motor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cD8_fyu76_0

2005-2007 had a little bit better head, but weaker block. 08-10 are direct injection and turbo, slighty less flowing head, but direct injection and can make some wicked power on stock setups

I know how tight I was in the subarat... It as bad enough that I felt, like if it was ever hit on the drivers side I was for sure getting hurt... there's no way in hell you were getting in that car and driving it.

Not sure on your price range, but something a little bigger that gets good fuel mileage is the TL. 04-06 you can get them in the manual without the S package for a decent price. I realize it's foreign, but without FI, you're more likely to be able to run 87 without issues. Only throwing this out there because I might pick one up for my next car.

Marco the people that I sold my WRX to are looking to possibly sell it for something else. Its a 2006 WRX TR 2.5L turbo Steel Gray Metallic it has 72k on it right now. I can talk to them and get back to you. All it has is a turbo upgrade(16g) mild exhaust and a tune puts down a safe 330whp. I sold it to them with those mods.

If you can do without launching and clutch dumps you will be ok with this car. Just take into note that the regular WRX 5spd does not like banging gears and launches.

All I can say on Subies is the majority of the modified ones I see have tremendous blow by so if its a car like that you want. Look for older owners and non modified cars.

That can be true. Even stock ones get blow by since the PCV systems are garbage but can be eliminated with an air/oil separator. Also the 2.5L are known for having crap rod/crank bearings that can let go off the showroom floor.

My advice would be to sell the SS outright, pay the note and just get a non-sports car beater till you get back on your feet.

A good friend of mine in Jersey has a turbo SS sedan and he loves it. He has the trifecta tune and downpipe. I believe it makes 310-320 fwhp which is pretty stout in a 3000 lb car. He hasn't taken it to the track yet but I would expect 107-109 MPH trap speeds. He said traction is tough to come by so it wouldn't ET well. I know he averages close to 30 MPG if he drives it reasonably in mixed driving.

He got around in the snow this past winter. I think a simple swap to snow tires is all you would need to have confidence in the white stuff.

If I absolutely cannot get my RWD Z28 stuck in the winter while on snow tires (and I can't) then a Cobalt SS should be perfectly fine.

Yuppers. And my friend was commuting from Edison to Meadowlands so it wasn't exactly a 2 mile commute....

I wouldn't mind having a lightly modded Cobalt SS/TC for a daily. Fun little cars.

IMO.....I would NEVER buy a FWD car. I'm just AWD/RWD bias I guess. Every FWD car I've owned, I hit something in......I think it's a curse. RWD one accident, AWD never crashed, just blew up the pistons.

I'd get the WRX and NEVER launch it (now that I experienced the Suby weakness aka rings). If you can get by a FWD go cobalt, if not keep the TB or go WRX.

***Just Suby background (I owned 2 STi's with a combo of ~250,000 miles) weak paint, weak tranny on the WRX's, weak internals. Great power, tq, and unstoppable in any amount of snow with dedicated snow tires. ***

Real tough to find a WRX and turbo cobalt...unreal! Mazda's are a dime a dozen.

Might just have to bite the bullet and get a supercharged version.

Whats your price point marco?

Think about the mazdaspeed3, legacy gt, saab 9-2x aero? Grand prix gtp/gxp?
You can find great deals on the S/C cobalts, they are fun to drive but i am undecided if its a car I would want to live with all the time. The Turbo ones 08+ seem more appealing to me.

I really want a Pontiac G8 GT but its not in the budget right now
WRX is a blast to drive! WOT around turns will leave you smiling! $500 in mods and it runs mid 12's and the dealer is fine with them. Actually they want to make it faster, haha.

Pontiac G8 is ok too just not as much fun. I have both as daily's and the WRX is awesome in any weather.

Honestly I have haven't been able to break anything on the WRX. This is after me and my wife driving it daily for years and well as multiple track trips. The beefed up the 09+ a bit and really havent heard of anyone breaking them. Clutch is the weak link but even that hasn't gone out yet.

20K on that and it looked twice as bad as my pickup after 75K, fwiw.
Not sure what year you have but paint quality is fine on my '09 and nothing creaks. Its going strong after 36k miles. You just need to get the car detailed to remove all the swirls the dealer puts in like any other car. I also get my detailed so the paint is protected.

I don't want to spend more than $15K, so I can't find 06+ WRX's in that price range.

Going to look at a 07 SS today, we'll see how that goes..08's cannot be found!

wowowowow. Do NOT get a Speed3. Read up on those first, they have a crapton of issues. They don't make good power and guys regularly hurt the motors with very little work done.

I'm not just saying this to be "Pro American" but I would really suggest the Cobalt SS. Its a terrific all around performer and it has an aftermarket.
