Default Next mod - Cam or Rearend/4.11s?

I am debating on giving Slowhawk a call about doing a tune/cam (something mild like a 224) or doing a new rear-end with some 4.11s. What would you guys do first? Obviously the rear is much more pricey, but more peace of mind. Which do you think would reduce my ET the most? Cam/Tune (stock rear/gears/tires) or a Rear/Tune/315s?

Car is an 02 Z, 6 speed, stock tire width (for now) and has 80K miles on it. Mods in sig.

Any votes for street tires/stock 10 bolt/4.10s?

The cam/tune/gears will make you quicker right up until you get towed off the track with a broken rear.

Again, that was my thinking as well. I may contact Slowhawk.

Does he build the rear ends in house? Use an outside vendor?

Do the rear end first. I sure wish I did.

What are you more interested in, street or track? Street - do the cam, track - 9" with 4.11s

Do the rear end first. My old Camaro I had 426 cam only and blew 3 rears. I became an expert at swapping it. Plus, if your still on stock 342's 323 or 273, then you won't really feel the cam pull until higher rpm's with stock gearing.

The camaro I had was a large cam, and 4.10's. The high revving of the cam, complimented the 4.10's nicely

go with the rear first. take the modding slow and do it the right way the first time so you wont have to "worry" about anything down the road. Gears will still pick the car up a good amount and then you can launch at a good rpm as well.

I vote rear, unless you will have the money already to do the rear should it blow soon after you do the cam. Hate to do the cam and have somethign happen a month later that you cant afford to fix.

Go with the rear first. I had a 224 cam on the original comp lobes (mild compared to the new stuff), fully bolted and ls6 intake. Took the car to the track last year last day with stock 10 bolt and 4.11 on my 275 street yokahamas and SPEC 3 clutch. Car was setup to corner from the original owner so springs, bilsteins, hotchkis sb's and boxed lca's. Couldnt get traction for anything, I was spinning 3rd gear. I made like 13-15 passes. Moral of the story, I had the pinion bearing so i thought that was bad a weeek before. I took it to my buddy to put a new one in and fould all the nuts and bolts loose(Pinion nut, cap bolts and the diff bolt. We put it all back together and made the ring gears a lil tight knowing the beating it was gona get. No more whine, sweet. After the last pass on the track it made a funny noise and I shut down. On the way home it whined all the way home with me wondering what it would have done with tires, probably popped! I ordered a Burkart Fab 9 this winter after selling off all my parts I was gather orver 3yrs for a forged LS2 build i was doing. My best 60ft was a 2.23 and now with tires and the Fab 9 im guessing it will be a lot better. Oh and BMR adjustable TA, relocation mount, driveshaft loop, and Adjustable PB. I was trapping 113.8 so im hopping a good time. Also added a Fast90/90, and TEA stage 2 heads waiting to go on. The LS2 would be nice but knowing the stock 10bolt isnt going to pop is even better.

Being a 6spd go with the 9inch or S60. If you dont have the money buy the axle and housing package and look for a third member local thats used. I ended up with 3.90's getting one that was used from my uncle. Go for the rear end and steeper gears. You will pick up time and be reliable. And get the drive shaft dont cheap out.

Have you ever seen how small the 4:10 pinion gear is on baby 10 bolt? That might help you with your decision.

Teensy Tinsy?

Yeah the car is mainly street driven, but is a very nice 02 Z/28 with all the right options, just a nice car that deserves the best in mods.

Sounds like a rear/gears/driveshaft is the way to go.

If this car is your only vehicle, then go with the rear end....If its not, go with the cam...Ive been cam only with a stock drivetrain for 4 years now, no issues. Call me lucky, but I dont beat the **** outta the car either.

I always prefer clutch, driveshaft and rear first. For the rear I prefer Midwest 9". Gear ratio depends on the future mods. NA I would do 4.11's. FI would be 3.73's unless turbo -3.50's.

Now,if you don't race at the track and just want a lope and highway pull then the stock rear will do fine with the 3.42's.
