if i were in your shoes id wait until the c7 comes out... the market is already booming with a ton of nice c5's but when the c7 comes out i have a feeling its going to double... and with there being that many forsale the prices are going to drop considerably.
also, if you plan on modding the car i would look into buying one already done the way you would like, i really wish i waited and did this instead of the route i took.... it saves so much money in the end..
there are many common problems with them, sign up on the corvette forum and do some research before you do anything, it will save you in the long run.

I would go with a C5 Zo6, but the price you quoted was way high. I would pass on the C6 esp the 2005 C6 as it is a car full of 1yr only parts. A c6 Z06 is fun, but pushes the cost way up and if it is pre 2009, the gm"wet" sump oil system needs upgrading( the tank is too small and needed better baffles)
on C5 Z car look for good wheel bearings, fully functional abs/TC systems, radiators in good condition. Check under the nose for bent rad supports from curb encounters, and the bottom of the rockers for cracked fenders and dmg from incorrect jacking. on a test drive listen for any noises, the 1/2 shafts in any vette dont like the dragstrip.
I autox and the C5 Zo6 is still king, the C6 cant beat it, smaller, lighter and less electronic nannys. The LS6 motor has way more durability than the LS3, LS2 and LS7, the LS9 is still an unknown. I wish that My C5 still had the LS6.
The C5 should have had the GM recall fit for the column lock done, a VIN check will tell you. The C5 seats suck, but the C6 is no better. GM did not improve the seats till 2012.

I had a 2001 Z06 before I sold it for my cobra. The vette was a fun car and felt like it stuck to the road around the twisties but it didn't have enough power for me. I would've had to dump a good amount of money into it to get it where I wanted. Take that same amount of money and put it into a cobra and you will easily have over 600 rwhp.
It's all about what you want though.
