The Springfield XDM 3.8 in 9mm is another good choice, comes with 19 round magazines. I would feel well armed with 19 rounds of 147gr. HST ammo. The weapon has a full size grip, but is compact enough to carry, and they shoot very well. This is a very easy weapon to shoot fast and accurate with.
I am not a big fan of Ruger semi-auto handguns, especially the SR series of guns. I have a lot of information in reference to the testing of these weapons, if you want more info., send me a PM.

Springfield 1911 v10, it's a compact 1911 and its a .45, here's a link to one and I hear they're getting hard to find.

Unfortunately in Mass the AG gets to decide what firearms we can purchase here. All of them have to pass some rigorous tests to become "approved" in Mass before they can be sold. Most mfg. don't care enough to even submit their pistols to be tested, hence the reason we can't even buy a brand new Colt here!

By the way, in the period since this thread first began, Ruger has finally introduced their 'Commander' (more compact - 4.25" barrel) version of it's SR1911.

Came across a place that had 18 of them but my thriftiness stood in the way, I felt that I could find it cheaper if I waited so I passed on it.
BIG mistake LOL, they sold out in like 8 hours.
The smaller one might be an even hotter seller.
Now with the prices of ammo sure to go up yet again, I'm not so sure I even want a .45 any more as I go to the range fairly often.
I do still love the 'feel' of a 1911 though so I was maybe thinkin' about a 9mm version (from another brand/name of course).

That's a nice little pistol, I have a Ruger MkIII 22/45 (also .22LR) and it's awesome, Ruger makes some great firearms. I was looking at the SR22 as well when I was considering getting a 2nd .22 for plinking.

I daily carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II, and it's easy to conceal with a good holster. It's only a 3" barrel so carrying IWB at 1:00 (also called appendix carry) is actually not bad. Currently using a Wilson adjustable kydex with leather lined one, but wish it had a second belt clip to hold it in place a little better.
My OWB holster is normally a Blackhawk SERPA for the retention and ease of on/off, but I honestly don't give a damn about printing - I open carry a lot when it's warmer.
I added Crimson Trace grips which improved my time onto target when practicing from a compromised position (on my back / one handed / etc.), and wouldn't want to be without the laser for a defense gun.
It does complain about some types of hollowpoint ammo, but the more rounds I put through it, the less it complains. Speer gold dot has been flawless for me though. For practice, Winchester white box works great too.
Oh last thing - GET A REAL BELT. Makes all the difference in the world. I have 2 from thebeltman.net , and they're worth every penny.
