Default Detailing: 2002 Z06 (Electron Blue)

What we have here is a 2002 Chevy Corvette Electron Blue Z06... 20k miles, 2nd owner and a Dealership that didn’t do the car ANY FAVORS for him!!! The owner put it in our hands after 3 weeks of ownership to correct the Dealership’s fine work and bring the car back to the finish it rightly deserves.

Scott and I spent 20 man hours on this beast and we both have to say, this car is 99 out of 100 when it comes to the paint. We were able to address all of the Dealership induced holograms and 99% of the defects found in the paint. Car finished looking dripping wet with a fantastic glow and a reflection in low light that you could mistake for a mirror. Fantastic car to work on.

Thanks for the opportunity Brian and enjoy! Now on to the rest of the write up, enjoy!

Thanks again to you and Scott! Can't see it in the pictures very well but the car had VERY bad swirl marks / Holograms in the paint. They were able to take it all out. It looks like a brand new paint job and i'm super happy!

Car looks awesome. That blue is just one of my favorites and you can almost swim in it. Sad to see the buffer swirls. And you'd be surprised how many cars on the highway just wave at me with those marks. Almost wants you to wave them over and hand them a biz card.

Dealerships or rather the vender that does the work for them can really **** up a car. I'd rather drive home a dirty car rather than have them touch it. Unfortunately cars NEED time and they work in volume and the detailing monkey getting paid minimum wage and smoking a bowl pack don't quite give that much of a **** bout your 40-50k car.

I gotta inventory my stock and resupply but def getting some power lock as I wanna try it out.

Looks great Danno. The 2 man team def works.

The 2 man team allows us to do a detail of this level within a day and working together keeps us going on tougher days. Wouldn't have it any other way, keeps it enjoyable.

We see so many dealer prepped cars that were made worse than likely were before. They basically work in wax with a rotary and a bonnet and just screw it all up, holograms everywhere. Plus you know they don't strip the paint of contaminates before they start rubbing on it. I'd never let them touch a car, just makes more work for you later.

We used a lot of compound on this car, the paint was stupid hard. Not often I have to use powergloss, the hood and rear deck made us work for it.

This car came out really good, its one of those cars I'd walk away from to take a break and come back and say damn!

My father in laws friend has a black 99 FCR c5 and that had some of the worst swirling ever seen. I did got get a chance to work on it but considering my 2002 trans am clear took a hell of a lot more work in the rear clip vs front (2008 respray) I could relate to the time needed. So as much as its the manufacture its the age.

JL ws6 and I did his wife's silver Avenger this weekend ( no pics) but it corrected easy and quickly with m105 and 2 guys made it be done tip to toe in 4 hrs. And that includes interior work.

The car looks fantastic! It looks better than it probably did when it rolled off the showroom floor.

Couple of quick Q's:
-Did you wash after clay bar, before compounding/polishing?
-How much do you dilute the IPA? You wipe down with IPA after all corrections have been done, prior to sealing?

Thanks

Thanks, I agree even brand new off the showroom cars typically need a little love.

On this car we just gave it an ipa wipedown after claying, sometimes we wash it again if there is a lot of residue, but the car needed minimal claying.

After the last compounding step we wipe the whole car down with IPA. The compound leaves oils on the surface that we need to removed before sealing. The mix is about 50/50 of 91% and distilled water.

So basically, as you stated above, this is the process you used???

Wash car w/ CG citrus
Dry car
Tape off molding w/ painters tape
Claybar w/ ONR dilution
Wipe down with IPA dilution
Compound w/ orange pad and S34
Polish w/ orange pad and PF2500
Polish w/ green pad and SF4000
Wipe down with IPA dilution
Use Amigo pre wax cleanser w/ black pad
Seal w/ Powerlock and allow to set up
Apply Autoglym HD paste wax by hand
Remove paste wax

Wash wheels w/ Sonax and tires w/ Westly’s
Dry wheels/tires
Seal wheels w/ Prima Hydro
Dress tires w/ AG6 tire shine
Apply Bare Bones to wheel wells

You got it pretty much, We clean the wheels during the inital wash though, but everything else sounds right. The S34a I just used in spots, not the whole car. The PF2500 does 80% of the corrective work so we use that the most, in fact most quick before/after pics are just after 2500, stuff finishes great, the 4000 is just a nice easy pass. (I hate how menzerna keeps changing names)

We do not use amigo often, in fact they don't make it anymore. Typically we go right to powerlock, but certain colors, especially color shifting blues I think adds a bit more depth so we went for it.

Oh and I spent a LOT of time chasing out the old wax from all the crevices that the dealer was sloppy with!

From one detailer to another- Killer Job!!! love how the electron blue finishes out. How do you like the Autoglym paste? Never tried there paste. I have used one of there polishes before and it worked pretty well. I usually use Collonite 845 Insulator wax or Meguires #26 Hi-tech yellow wax after compounding/polishing.

Have you tried the Nanoscrub pads yet? I've been having some good luck with them, car has to be pretty wet but you can blow through a panel really quickly. I reserve the clay for tighter areas that are hard to reach with the porter cable.

Thank you!
It's pretty decent actually, I got a killer deal at wally world a couple years ago that I just bumped into. Selling them for $15 a pop, I cleared em' out

Seems to have good staying power and a nice clean glow.

Both the wax's you mention are great, typically any carnuba based wax is worth a shot in my book, I am a fan of paste wax myself.

I hope Brian can get us a couple pics in the sun

I sure have, I usually reserve it for the tougher jobs. It does work out pretty good, sometimes a little marring, but way better than being tedious with clay. This car was already pretty clean so a 20 min clay is all it needed really.
