Default I got a new DVD player...

Things are slow so what the hell. I have alot of backed up DVD's. Some of them wont play (I had 16 out of 60 that I checked, I have alot more) so I went to Circuit City and had the sales guy connect 5 DVD players to monitors and let me test the movies that wouldn't read.

None of the Sony units would read the DVD's not matter which unit I tried.

The Samsung unit worked perfectly but it was 180.00 and looked too tacky with the shiny silver, purple backlights and that stuff.

The Panasonic worked as well as the Samsung, didn't look AS bad and cost 75.00. The best looking units were the Sonys but they didnt work for jack.

Another thing I noticed is the DVD players now have the 408P enhancement. It made my movies look a little better which was cool.

i am shopping for a dvd recorder, but i want one that "upconverts" to near HD levels. They use a DVI output so make sure your TV has a DVI input. mine only has one DVI so i would need to buy a DVI splitter. most players offer progressive scan which is what i think you tried to type...its 480p or progressive scan. but like i said, there are new ones just hitting the market that are better than 480p; they upconvert to 720p or 1080i. not true hidef (because the dvd doesn't contain enough data for hidef), but better than 480p. true hidef DVD's are a year or two off, but there are a handful out there from microsoft but of course you need the special player to view them.
this is the audio/visual forum right?

That's pretty cool with the newer hi-def formats coming out. I don't really like the stand alone DVD recorders. I make my backups on my computer. I like the ability to change hardware, firmware, settings and burning software at the click of a mouse instead of buying an entire new unit for big $$$ just because I can't tweak or update something. I'm more of a PC guy.

For conversation sake, what kind of blank DVD media do you use? I have used Ridata, Memorex and Supermedia (a no name brand but it works in everything from the crappiest DVD player to a sh*tbox Playstation 2, very compatible).

HDMI™ Video Upconversion - 720p/1080i

Very nice.

Question for you. Considering the largest dual layer DVD is 9.4 gigs and after your finished backing up the movie; it's erased to make room for the next. Why do you want such a large hard drive, why not just get a 10-20 gig unit and save yourself the money?

Stay away from the Toshiba and Samsung units. Go with a Denon DVD-1910, 480p/720p/1080 upconverting player. I had the Toshiba and hated it. The Denon is MUCH better just make sure you set the progressive scan parameter to on. Here is a link: www.digitalcraze.com

some people want a large hard drive because they can't burn it to DVD if it is copy right protected, which many movies in hi def are. so you will have to leave it on your hard-drive or transfer it to your computer's harddrive. i currently have a cable box with built-in 80gig harddrive and if i save hidef movies, it does't hold much (6 hours?). but with normal def, it hold over 30 hours. the hidef stuff eats up space.

another dvd recorder with harddrive and video upscaling is this philips, but it ain't out yet:

I probaly have the worst TV, it's just a plain old 32 inch RCA tube (not even a flat tube screen). I'll def get one of these up converison players when I get myself a Plasma. The Plasma's could really use a image quality boost anyhow.

if you don't want the expense of a plasma, look into the LCD and/or DLP rear projection sets from sony and samsung. i have sony LCD rear projection and its awesome. these have same image quality as plasma, but slightly bigger cases. my inlaws have the samsung and its mint too. i preferred the sony when i did my shopping (go to many different stores and view them your self before making decision).

here's my setup from before xmas:
http://www.ponycars.net/sony.htm

the black sony reciever on the left, and the black sony dvd/changer on the right are no longer there. they have been replaced with ONE unit, a sony tuner/amplifier/dvd changer. steel face. ES line (top of line sony with 5 year warranty from the factory; not a warranty sold separately from the retailer). Sony 5 DVD/SACD/CD Changer Receiver AVD-C70ES

No, Denon to my knowledge does make a recorder. I have the 1910 and love it. I have a Yamaha RX-V9 receiver too that does the up conversion. When I compared the two, the Denon does a better job at it because of the progressive scan option. The Yamaha work well when up converting S-VHS.

What a mess, get any cheap old computer, spend 70.00 on the fastest DVD burner out there and make a copy of any movie and have it on a physical DVD then you can just buy a nice player and save yourself all that cash and hassle. Or you can find out if you can install multiple harddrives and try to get something like 10 of the 200 gig drives. I really dont like the idea that I cant put some of those movies on DVD's. I'm just picky like that.

What model was that TV on your site?

I have the 70XBR Sony LCD. It is an awesome set. Picture is much better than plasma and no worries about the screen burning. Just replace the lamp once in a while.

Mikey, thats an awesome LCD. How thick is side profile and how much does the entire thing weigh? I did a little internet search and found that it's not for sale anymore.

From my manual: 71.75"W x 45.25"H x 25.5"D. 222lbs.

Try here, this is where I got mine: www.digitalcraze.com They are still available. Model is KDF-70XBR950. Well worth the price.

The problem is you can't burn HD content on a DVD, you would have to downconvert it to standard definition, losing quality.

The only way to save HD content now is:
(1) save it with a computer to another hard drive
(2) digital VHS

Blue-Ray and HD-DVD should be on the market next year but the burners will probably start out at $1000+.

Or you can find out if you can install multiple harddrives and try to get something like 10 of the 200 gig drives.
I wish you could but they make the box extremely tamper proof. I wouldn't mind swapping out the 80 gig drive for a 400 gig drive.

I really dont like the idea that I cant put some of those movies on DVD's. I'm just picky like that.
I don't like the idea that to put them on DVD I'm losing high definition. Now THAT's picky. I want them in HD or nothing.
