Default Anyone from Boston?

Im not from the states, will be visiting boston in august, my wife got a job offer at Boston Univ. Was wondering if theres any info anyone has to make being there easier? best ways for transport? areas for shopping, entertainment, cost of living, were also looking for an appartment there, any info would be appreciated.

It took me 3 hours to find a cab once and some cabs wouldn't take me to where I wanted to go! Boston does suck but it's nice at the same time. I had a horrible time when I lived there. Just get use to how use the T train line, it seems confusing at first but it really isn't. I'd go to a red sox game or hang out fenway park during a game. That's usually fun.

are you going to be IN boston or out in a suburb somewhere? if you are going to be IN the city, the cost of living is even more astronomically higher than the suburbs, but there are shitloads of entertainment and food options.

here you go man,, http://www.mbta.com/
cost of living is pretty high, just a dinner for one can run you anywhere from $15-$50 depending on where you want to eat
dont know about the cabs but careful with them, i was reading that allot of cabbies will take the round about ways with out of towners to rack up the fare

Default Boston Living

I grew up in the Boston area, in East Boston and Revere. I moved to New Hampshire 10 years ago, but still visit family down there often. (I was just at my brothers in Saugus yesterday). Your best bet is to live outside the city and use the "T" to commute. Owning a nice car in Boston can be a problem, insurance rates are very high, and theft is a concern. Even driving in Boston can be a challenge unless you are a native.
There are a lot of good things about Boston, there is always someting to do or see, and New England is a beautiful part of the country, but do a lot of research before you move. Take several trips and carefully check out where you want to move so there are no surprises.
Good luck, and if you have any questions I'd be glad to try and answer them.
John

I spent 23 years in South Boston. Driving around isnt bad, it's the parking that gets you....paying 25.00 to park either 30 minutes or 12 hours is annoying. Where is she going to be working, you never know; the parking may not be an issue. If it is, get used to the MBTA. Cost of living is the same all around MA (and I bet it's what your already used to). The only thing that gets cheaper as you move further outside of the city is rent/property.

Oh yea, 1,000.00 is pretty decent, almost too cheap if your renting in downtown Boston, I'd check that place out before you sign papers to see if your moving into a shithole or crummy area. You can used Boston Roommates, Boston.com, Roomates.com, Yahoo.com's apartment listing, apartments.com and whatever else.

Shopping and entertainment. You dont even need to look, it's everywhere. There are prob about 35 different little newspapers that you can pick up with enough stuff to make you sick.

just caue shes working at BU dont mean you need to live in boston. Look at the allston/brighton area. the green line T runs to every different section of the Bu campus. i live about probably 3 or 4 miles from B.U. and im IN Newton One of the safest Citys in america. its a 10 min drive to get to the first of the B.U. dorms. prolly another 10 to get to the other end. if ya need any advice PM me and ill give ya some other tips and tricks of living in boston.

i went on vacation there a few months ago and had a great time. however, we stayed in braintree outside of the city and took the t-line everywhere. its very confusing at first, but once you get it its pretty easy. it's 4 color-coded train lines that can take you pretty much anywhere you want to go in the city. for shopping, theres a huge area by the water called faniel hall (sp?) that has a ton of shops and restaurants. good luck with the move!

hey guys, ive been in boston for a week, its nice here, weather is good, maybe a little sunny and hot at times, but usually pretty good. the t seems to be the best way to get around. i have a question. i want to go to New York for a couple of days, whats the best way to get there? are there any interstate trains and stuff?

also, are there any large discount stores like walmart in the area because i havent seen any yet?

thanks

Id say check with BU and see if they have any special deals they can give you on some apartments in the area that they own as your wife will be working for them so they should be able to help you out. If not then as everyone else said look in the surrounding towns, such as alston/brighton/newton/quincy/etc as you should be able to find an apartment there cheaper than in the city. Also, best mode of transportation to get into/out of boston is the commuter rail, which i take everyday into south station from westboro, and the subway/bus system.
