Thumbs down F*#$ing 4L60E!!!

Well it finaly happened on my way to work today, must have blown out the 3-4 clutch packs because it wont go into 3rd or 4th. I'm only 19 yet I've destroyed 3 4L60Es already, I'm thinking I have a curse.

Anyway, I'm done with them, T-56 here I come.

BTW, local sponsers, check your PM's, I need a shop that can do a swap soon(ish).

no curse other then having it in your car.. they are junk tranny's and don't take abuse well at all.. especially if you are making power.

I'll have my T56 setup for sale in the near future if you're intrested.. but probably not soon enough as I assume it's your daily driver.

If built right a 4L60 can take alot of abuse. There are alot of people running them with no problems at all. A bad tune on a car can definitely shorten the life of a 4L60.

Tim you also haven't been flogging it senseless with 500+ rwhp.. yet. wait until that car has slicks and over the 500 rwhp mark.. that thing will melt... you can change fluid/filters all you want.

Brad I agree, an intense maintenance schedule will help alot..but it's still only a matter of time.

I have over 10,000 miles sense Jan. and over 100 passes with my 4l60e it put down 750rwhp and cuts 1.30 60ft we are mostly at the 1/8 mile but it runs 6.0's and will run deep 9's in the 1/4 I have had 1 failure it broke the out put shaft all else was perfect, I have also broken a out put shaft on a th400 so i will say if its built right it will do as good as any other its just hard to find someone who can built it right

I have a 4l60 in my Camaro. Best so far is a 9.7 @143MPH, plus it gets plenty of street miles too.
Like slowhawk said, just have one built right and they take plenty of abuse.

I hear what you are all saying... but for every guy that has one that has stayed together under that kind of abuse, there's 30 people that are blowing them up with 400 rwhp. The th400, you buy one from a reputable tranny company, and you are good to go for a long, long time, you can give that thing a beatdown like there's no tomorrow and it doesn't really care.. can they break, yes. But not very often. The 4l60's, I mean yeah I am hearing what you guys are saying, but a good question to ask, is what is making one stay together and others not? Problem is, I don't even think the guys that are building them can explain why some of the failures happen how they do.

I have a buddy of mine that has has had 11 of them in his car. He's had the things rebuilt by a local shop that is very good near him, one from tci, one from yank, one from rossler, one from dr evil, and a couple warrenty replacments too from the above. He's had the tranny tune looked at by 2 differnet people, both have had similar tunes work in other cars and not have a problem.... thing is, his car's making about 570 rwhp, it's a 383 ls1 with h/c and a vortech with an upgraded head unit, and the car's a pig, over 3800 with him in it. He uses that car too, hard. With that kind of power, in a heavy *** car, the tranny just can't seem to take it. He's broken everythign in the tranny too, I mean everythign, one of them the case even cracked when the input shaft broke.

He's now come to the reality that if he wants to keep ovedrive, a 4l80 is gonna have to go in.... I think teh car's down for a while for some motor changes, and when it goes back together, the 4l80 will go in. I think he found one in a truck that he's gonna use for a core swap. Have to see, I think that will solve his problems..... but who knows.

I second that. I had over 500 track passes 200 some odd street races and 85,000 miles before mine went.

Add another survivor for the 4L60E brigade.......

Hell, my stock 4L60E survived 16,000 miles with my Z making 405 RWHP and once I had it rebuild by SRA Transmission it took over 6,000 mile of abuse behind my blown LT1 that made 654 RWHP (and went a best of 10.02 @ 137) before I parted the car out and moved the tranny to my 73 Z/28.
