Yankees Pitcher Cory Lidle dies in Manhattan plane crash
Just heard it. Here's the story from ESPN. He was the only one in the plane, hit a 50 story building.

I love how celebrities think they can fly just cause they can do other things well.
I have a PPL, it's not hard to get, but being a good pitcher does not equal being a good pilot.
The biggest surprise to me is that the instructor did not avoid the crash. The hit the building going east, crossing the river from NJ. I am sure they were supposed to make a left and go up the Hudson coridor. Its a common rout to go past NYC at the alt they were at. What I think happend is that they were waiting for instructions from New York Approch to turn left, New York Approch has a HUGE traffic load, forgot about them, never gave them a cource correction, so they just flew along not thinking about it untill it's too late. Plus he was bellow min allowable alt.
The Pilot in command is the final authority on the safety of the flight. Even w/o instruction they should have turned left to avoid NYC.
It's totaly pilot error. Though it is a tragedy when anyone dies. I do not feel sorry for him. It was his mistate.

Ok, well for one the pilot (Cory Lidle had 75+ hours of flight time) Also, I read and heard on the radio that there was a distress call that went out, so it's not a 100% guarantee that it was pilot error. They also said that the instructor was in the plane.
Either way it's too early to tell, all the facts are not out yet. Time will tell, but I'm sure it wasn't pilot error if the instructor was right there.
