Do a Google search of the following: "(your state) vehicle law nitrous oxide"

If you live in Ohio, here's the action section and code:

Sec. 2925.33 Possessing nitrous oxide in or on a motor vehicle. [Effective 01/01/1997]

(A) As used in this section, "motor vehicle," "street," and "highway" have the same meanings as in secxtion 4511.01 of the Revised Code.

(B) Unless authorized under Chapter 3719., 4715., 4729., 4731., 4741., or 4765. of the Revised Code, no person shall possess an open cartridge of nitrous oxide in either of the following circumxstances:

(1) While operating or being a passenger in or on a motor vehicle on a street, highway, or other public or private property open to the public for purposes of vehicular traffic or parking;

(2) While being in or on a stationary motor vehicle on a street, highway, or other public or private property open to the public for purposes of vehicular traffic or parking.

(C) Whoever violates this section is guilty of possessing nitrous oxide in a motor vehicle, a misdexmeanor of the fourth degree.

A misdemeanor of the fourth degree is punishable by a fine of $250 - $1000 and six months in jail. Obviously these levels are at the descretion of a judge.

It would be up to the officer to interpret "open container" and to decide if the open container law is intended toward inhalation or in our case racing or reckless operation.

put the bottle in the trunk and dont have any visable nitrous equipment in the passenger compartment. that will save you from having to answer any unwanted questions about nitrous and giving them a reason to ask to search your trunk.
they cant legally search your "locked" trunk or glovebox without your permission unles they have probable cause to do so. so if they ask to search your trunk, you can say no but than it opens you up for more problems...they'll call in the drug sniffing dogs and all that crap probably.

What they dont see wont hurt you....period! the laws of our great states are sooo fucked up on the subject that all its gonna do is take up your valuable time and money. goodluck.
