What happens if you get pulled over and a cop sees that you have nitrous hooked up in your car ( actually connected to the feed line)? i know they cant do anything if you just have it disconnected

what state? i've been warned ONE time to "not open that bottle while on the street" after doing nitrous passes on the highway and then purging the pressure off of the solenoid after closing the bottle.
"yes sir officer, i would never even consider doing that"

actually there are federal laws to be considered as well as state. if a cop want's to be a ***** he'll write you up for transporting large amount of a hazardest product without proper paper work and permit's.you maybe required to have a hazmat endorsement depending how much you have which can be a $1000 to over $10,000 fine. most cops other then dot officer's don't know hazmat regulations though so your normaly alright as long as it's not hooked up if you get a nosey cop.

None of these suggestions will help if they are not knowledgeable of the laws in YOUR state. Every state is different. It however is on public record and you can look it up and see so you know where you stand.

Lets see, here in NH you can have 4 cops on the scene all scratching there heads while looking through their little law booklets. They can call all the back up they want, look through all the books they want, but they can't do a ******* thing.

What state are you from?
In NH its perfectly legal. You only need a Hazmat sign if you have over 500lbs of the stuff in your car.
Maine, you need a reason to have it in the car, like a car show, race track etc.
NJ you need a permit.
Its already been said, but every state is different.

Its not illegal to transport nitrous in your car. Its a non-toxic, non-flammable gas, as long as the bottle is clearly labeled to DOT standards indicating the content and properties of the gas (oxidizer), you're fine. You are not breaking any federal transport regulations (FWIW, you used to be able to transport up to 150lbs on a plane! I think that might've changed now). You are not going to get in HAZMAT transportation trouble for a nitrous oxide bottle. BTW, Propane as a class 4 flammable is viewed as a greater transportation hazard than nitrous as per OSHA and the USDOT. Yet the feds won't throw you in jail for bringing home a Blue Rino cylinder from Home Depot
I also think the illegality and permit requirements are less of a factor if its ppm sulfur-add, since then you can prove its not being used for unlicensed medical purposes (aka getting high). I know everyone says NJ requires a permit; i'd like to see the written letter of the law, because I don't think vehicular use nitrous fits the intent.
As far as your state vehicle and traffic law thats a different matter. Many laws state it is illegal to USE nitrous on the street. Well that has to be proven. Generally if you disconnect the feedline, if an officer asks you can show him, and you can prove you are not USING nitrous, just TRANSPORTING nitrous. If its connected, and the valve is closed and not able to be opened remotely, you should still be fine. If you have a remote opener, close it and purge out the line pressure. Then point him to your pressure gauge, but you're at risk for more of a hassle. If you were spraying, well then you're breaking the law.
Easiest way to save yourself a hassle is just not to keep the bottle in the car unless you plan on using it.
