Maine: A place where my closest Wal-Mart is 40 miles away. A great place to ATV and Snowmobile. The "winter" (AKA season Z stays hidden in the garage) usually lasts from late October until April. Inspection laws SUCK here!!! They will fail you for surface rust on brake lines! Its really not a bad place to live, but I have lived here my whole life so what the hell do I know. You other guys want to pick up where I left off?

meh, there are a lot of really nice places to live up this way, as long as you are not attached to the hustle and bustle of city life. Our biggest city, Portland / South Portland, would look like a small town to many people from larger states. As supajut stated, Inspection / motor vehicle laws in general SUCK in this state. If you have any kind of a heavy right foot at all, you will hate this state. one ticket for 15 - 29 over, which is VERY easy on some nice rural backroads with unreasonably low limits, is $315 and 6 points (half way to a suspended license.) But, if you like the outdoors, and enjoy hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, or anything like that, you will be just fine.

The Bangor area is also pretty nice. How much acreage are you looking for?

10 Acres shouldn't be too hard to find up this way. I personally live in Lisbon Falls, which is about 30 minutes northwest of the portland area. The only real entertainment outside of Portland would be watching all the leafpeepers driving around in the fall. For real though, there are quite a few good bars in the old port (portland), and a couple in the Lewiston / Auburn area, but outside of that, not too much.

Like Nick said (Hi Nick by the way, been a while!) 10 acres or more shouldn't be an issue up here! My father actually owns around 130 and with his house and everything he only pays around $400 a YEAR in taxes. Look for an unorganized territory if you want cheap taxes, he lives in Orneville. I live in Milo, my taxes on a 2 story with paved drive on an acre lot and a 3 bay garage are just over $1000 annually. I guess the better question is what are your interests. There is plenty here to do.... In the Bangor area we have Speedway 95, Winterport Drag, miles of 4 wheeler/snowmobile trails, lakes everywhere for fishing or boating, etc. The LS1 scene is kinda dead up here though.....

I'm from Maine too. Apparently I just climbed out from under a rock since i haven't seen this topic over the last four days.

If you stay away from the greater Portland area, you should be able to find a place with quite a few acres for a reasonable amount of money. The only downfall is if you live in the middle of nowhere you'll have to drive a ways to get to work.

As far as schools, there is the University of Maine in Gorham, Portland, Augusta, Orono, and a couple others I think. You also have the University of New England, Southern Maine Community College, and a bunch of other colleges, so you're not really limited.

Keep in mind, NH and Mass aren't too far away if you live in southern Maine and don't mind traveling. I think it's a common misconception that the entire state is vacant , but thats far from the truth. Now, cross the ME/NH border, drive 3-4 hours or more...thats a different story.

The other guys are right about the inspection laws up here, they really suck. They don't like to see rust, and they don't like altered exhaust. If your car has anything other than a stock exhaust, its supposed to have a certificate stating that it isn't over 96db or some BS like that. If you have an inspection sticker, and a garage fails you, they cut your sticker in half so the next garage you go to knows something is wrong with your car.

Just moved to the Bangor area. I hear there is a cruise-in on Union every Wednesday. I plan on hitting that up. Anyone wanna grab a beer and bench-race, let me know. I know no one here!
