I think you won't lose out which ever system you choose. It all comes down to the exclusive games. Halo, Gears of War vs Metal Gear 4, God of War. Just to name a few.
I highly doubt the 360 is maxed out. There will be new techniques and ways to pump more out of the system.
Same with the PS3. I guess it has more potential. Have I seen it yet? No. Maybe in the future. But people keep saying wait and see. But here is a link for COD4 360vsPS3 side by side. The only thing I saw different, is the PS3 version has more rain. WOW!!

Here is some info on the cell CPU
http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell0_v2.html
Notice it has multiple SPE's, think of them as branches of the CPU not really cores but whats called "algorithm accelerators" This will allow computations to run simultaneously and take advantage of things like multithreading and have greater task assignment. This translates into things like better game physics, artificial intelligence, higher texture detail, etc.
Problem is they are still learning how to write code for that. So games now are all designed to be as compatible as possible to avoid the overhead of expensive platform conversion. This means that the potential of the system is not being used nearly to it's full extent, it's got a lot more horsepower and tricks up it's sleeve than the competiton.
We'll have to revisite this post from now in a year or so and see where we are at. I could be wrong about what will be "the console to get", but I doubt it.
I really like where the PS3 is going, and i like what the 360 can do, both are solid systems. I tought about all these things before I got either one. Eventually it was the game titles and the other things like Blu-Ray and it's building potential that did it for me.

Well I dont have any technical info like Danno has but I own the 360 and have the HDMI going to my 42" Sony tv figured I would throw in the irony. I like the 360 a lot but then again I am not a big gamer. I only own COD4 and GRAW2. I did see my buddies PS3 a week or so ago and I was impressed. I liked that they kept the basic shape of the old PS2 controller. Its cool that it is WIfi. The 360 is cheaper and has more cool games as of right now. Just my opinion the PS3 is probably the better system overall for big time tech nerds that know how to use all that stuff. For me the PS3 took to long to come out, was to expensive, and didnt have the games to back it up in order for me to buy one. They both are cool and as a side note I wish the industry would decide on either Blue ray or HD dvd.
This is awsome! I don't have either now but I tried both. I gave both back because there was practically no game's for them, atleast none that I am too interested in. I even saw all the blu-ray dvd's I wanted to see within the month, wasn't much at all. For the last few weeks it just sat there so I figured why not return it while I can. I then tried the xbox and I got tired of that even faster, played a few game's and that's it since you had to get the upgrade for hd movie's. I'm sure there wasn't anymore hd movie's than blu ray anyway so I didn't bother, although I really wanted to see tokyo drift in HD (damnit)
The ps3 seemed like the better system to me, much much better from the graphics to the commercials I was downloading which I thought looked better, lol. And correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the ps3 watercooled? If so that's cool as hell, a lot of my friends have gotten that red light or w/e it was for their 360 I think cause it overheated? So it seems the ps3 is more reliable, whated xbox do to fix this issue?

well, i have had a 360 for 2 years and have replaced 2 of them i just bought a ps3 for the blu ray player not to be my gaming console, not to say that i wont get a few games for it.. But this is my opinion, i love my 360 it has awsome options, great graphics and the online play is incredible.. the ps3 is nice looking whisper quite compared to the 360 graphics are also amazing, controler is sweet, bluray player is crystal clear i couldnt be happier... The ps3's online sucks major *** compared to the 360's sony has a lot of work to do in that dept. I never thought i wanted xbox live when i got my 360. but it is very addictive and incredible to play ans talk **** and play with your friends and have team games and the best part is you play with different people all the time., right now i say the 360 is a better all around system, as fars as games and online play, i think the ps3 has more capibility in the future and the blu ray is a plus and is more computer like compared to the 360, but both are great systems. good luck..
I had them both....I sold my ps3. I was a big sony fanboy but when the original xbox came out it blew away the ps2. I got resistance when I bought the ps3 and it was horrible...online sucks....granted it's free compared to the live cost of 50 bucks. I love my 360...I don't care about processor speed, hdmi 1.2 to hdmi 1.3 or any other specs....all I want to do is play kick *** games online and the 360 has them beat hands down.
Xbox 360 for sure. Ive never been a huge Sony fan, but I owned both at one time. The ps3 is great for the fact that it has a blu ray player, but unless you plan on watching a ton of movies or want to spend 30 dollars a dvd than its not needed. Personally I only got a ps3 for a few games, but they arent coming out for at least another year, so I decided to sell it and buy a 37" hdtv with the money from my ps3. Im glad I did because now I really enjoy my 360 a lot more.
I would say if you just wanna play games and are happy with standard dvd viewing, 360 for sure. While the ps3 is partial upgradeable, it wont last forever just like most consoles, I new one will replace it. They really both have their ups and downs.
While ya the 360 has had a ton of problems, I think they are slowly phasing out now. The ps3 console is nice, but the controllers feel cheap and I dont know if they shipped rumble yet. I also didnt like the fact that I had to buy and hdmi cable, the ps3 does not come with any hd cables.
**Edit**
I posted this after you said your gonna get a ps3. Good luck, what games did you plan on getting?

I am a HUGE Koei fan in regards to the one, if not most popular series for any system, the Dynasty Warriors Series, this is based on England and France's 100 Year war and I am VERY excited about playing!

Cool awesome man.
To answer a few earlier questions.
No the PS3 is not water cooled
Rumble controllers are coming out soon, probably qtr 1 2008 by the latest, maybe by x-mas, well see. The controllers are really light and they don't have the same feel the old style ps2 one's do, but you get used to em' quick and they hold a charge for a real long time.
For games I would get COD4 over Resistance and Dirt if you like racing games. Ninja Gaiden is a good game too and has a lot of extra content on the PS3 version. I plan on getting madden 08, but I'm waiting for the price drop. Have fun with the system and tell us what you think.
For X-mas I am asking for Planet Earth on Blu-Ray
