Default Built a new Computer..

Damn- it even started, errr.. "booted" right up..

Windows Vista 64bit, Gigabyte Mother Board w/ Athlon 64 dual core, 500 gb sata WD hard drive, sata DVD/CD burner, and 4 Gb of ram.

Only problem was the funky Vista 64bit didn't see the optical drive, and I found a patch on a Vista forum which worked, some genious kid in Malaysia!

Now- you think folks fight on the piston-head forums... you gotta see the propeller-head guys go at it!

Damn- they even list the "mods" to thier "rigs" like the car folks!

Anyway, I did some reading online and got everything at:

http://www.microcenter.com/ and I understand there's on on the Island, too (I used Paterson NJ.. tax break "urban enterprise city w/ 3.5% tax!)

Fun stuff ain't it.

You can toss a new PC together for a few hundred bucks nowadays. I never understood why people bought packaged pc's when you can get exactly what you want for much cheaper if you piece it together.

I've probably built 50 pc's and everytime it's cheaper and easier. I've only done a couple Vista machines though, I still run XP myself.

Don't even bother with Vista. It's just the new WindowsME if you remember that horrid mistake.

I primarily run Linux (Xubuntu) at work, and XP at home. The only reason I even touch Windows at home is because all the tuning software works easily in Windows, and the few games I still play when I have some time.

Building computers is fun, especially when it comes to the research. When I worked at my college's help desk, I was throwing rigs together in like 20 minutes and had it imaging the hard drive already. I got it down to a science. I'm a little out of the desktop hardware loop now, pretty much because cars are my new hobby in life

It all depends on how you use it. For my gamming rig I would not be without dx10.

For a gaming rig, I'd run Windows 2008 Server.

Windows 2008 is really nice. I like the Server Core option. However with my current build/OC'ing, I am waiting for the games to catch up with the technology and will wait for the next build to change OS.

Have you heard anything (good or bad) about Windows Cloud?

I haven't heard anything about it, really. I know it'll be more official in a couple weeks but thats about it. I'm impressed by Windows on an enterprise level, but when it comes to desktop computing Vista really is not the greatest choice.

Right now virtualization is THE way to go, so I'm curious what this Cloud project will be fully capable of.

nice. i just put a Core 2 Quad Extreme in mine not too long ago and an SLI 800 GTX setup along with Raid 0 hard drives. I think i spent 3100 for everything on newegg..not too bad. I can run any game maxed out with full AA and nothing lags.

My setup:

64-bit Kubuntu running Vista, XP and Ubuntu in virtual machines via VirtualBox. The second HD stores the vm files so performance is very good.

Best of all worlds!

nice. my rig is basic I guess, compared to some of my friends. Read: blade server turning gaming machine.

ASUS M2N-E motherboard
AMD 6000+ Dual core
ATI XT 1800 video card
4 gig of dual channel DDR2
approx. 1.5 TB of storage
(500 and 320 gig internal, two 320 gig externals)
Antec Case
Etc. Etc.

Hoping to throw in an ATI 4870 and a new processor in it soon.

Where do you learn about how to build these? Or which components are better than others? My laptop is getting old. I was thinking of cleaning that thing up and using it only for tuning and on the road stuff. A nice new machine would be nice.

Technology get's obsolete the second you buy it. I used to mod and upgrade my pc constantly but then I realized that car mods don't go obsolete, so that's where my money is flowing to now.

Yep

I'm sure I'll build something expensive in the next year or two, though. Just because I'm a nerd.
