Default Thinking I need a motor :(

Well the other day I started my SS up with the cutout CLOSED for a change and I heard a pretty loud ticking/screeching noise. So I popped the hood and sure enough it sounds pretty bad. My a/c belt was squeeling so I took it off and started the car to get a better listen and at first it seemed maybe a rocker let go or I had a collapsed lifter.

Fast forward to yesterday. I started pulling the intake off, got the valvecover off. Then started disconnecting the mid pipe from the exhaust and low and behold water/coolant was in the exhaust. NOT GOOD. Probably blew a head gasket and got coolant in the motor and spun a rod or main bearing.

Iam going to pull the rockers today and inspect them and drain the oil to look for metal shavings. Also pull the pushrods out and check those too. But it isnt looking to promising Here is the video below. Dont mind the squeeling a/c belt.

Just do a coolant pressure test, if the pressure drops and you do not see any fluid dripping out you probally have a head gasket gone. As far as new motor maybe not. Hopefully you did not crack a wall, that would give you a reason to do some CNC 243 59cc, thinner head gasket. Bumping the compression up a little bit to.

If its only a head gasket, then what the hell is causing that noise. Lifter issues??

Well I drained the oil and there were no shavings in the oil so thats a good sign. Got the header off this morning, just need to take off the rockers and then the head is ready to come off.

Yeah you read my mind about the 243's. My buddie Joe has a pair, not too sure if he is willing to part with them though. I just hate to do all of this work and still have a ticking noise after it goes together.

Yeah I got the head pulled off today. Pistons look good, rockers are good, pushrods look fine.

So I can eaither buy new lifters etc etc and spend the money to put it back together and run the risk of having it tick. Or just leave it apart until I can afford to put a motor in it.

Did you run it with the main serpentine belt off also to see if the noise remained?

I will try to take a pic of the gasket when I can. When I pulled the head off the gasket stayed stuck to the block

Let me know if I can help at all. Or I can come over and look at it. I wish I could have heard the noise before you took it apart. I had a loud screeching noise once and it turn out that one of the intake orings wasnt sealing and it was loud as hell. I figured it was f++ked but it wasnt.

pull the lifters and check the rollers on all of them to see if they are messed up. hold the lifter straight up and down and try to push the roller up..if it moves up and down its trashed.

Thanks guys. I will keep you guys informed. I am up in Jax for work and will be home on thursday night.

I also did notice when I was taking the header off that the rear header bolt was real loose, so I know I had a exhaust leak there.

With the head off now. How to I do about getting the lifters out? Do I have to turn the motor over by hand and hope that the lifters stay in the trays?? Or could I use a pen magnet to pull them out?

Ya you dont have to worry about the lifters falling unless you are planning in taking the cam out. If it is a trashed lifter I hope it didnt F up your cam.

Thanks man. Yeah Ive been getting alot of different thoughts about what it is or isnt. I am going to pull the other head this weekend and check the lifters out. If I cant see anything wrong then I dont think I am going to fix it until I can get a good forged short block for it. Or forge the one Ive got now...

Spin all the accessories by hand, as well as all the idlers and tensioner pulleys. See if there's any vertical play in them as well. If there was a screeching noise and you had no metal in the oil (amy want to cut open the filter) it almost surely wasn't anything internal.
