Anyone local running either of these transmissions in their car at the moment? I can meet up with you to keep your drive to a minimum.
My car is currently waiting for another tranny build. Trying to decide if I would miss the extra gear in my 4L60E or not. I would like to take a ride in your car, you driving of course, to check out the shifting/stuff like that. Th400's are ALOT cheaper than the 60 and 80e's!

I am in Melbourne, and did a ls swap into my fox with a TH400 behind it.
A big question is what dort of driving do you do?
Since my trip to work is all city the TH400 works OK, but when I drive to Orlando to run the car at the track I have 45 minutes to an hour drive re-inforcing why new cars have overdrive gears. If I did the car over again I would have went 4l80.

I only drive 8 miles to work and it's not my daily driver. But, if I drive to Bradenton (BMP) it's about 58 miles. Don't really want the car running 3k+ rpm for a long drive. This thing is loud enough driving it around town/low rpm.

if anyone drove a hot rod before overdrives you wouldn't worry, the OD is the norm now but before OD's driving was normal, example:
drove my 1st 68 to NC, T350 3:36 gears, ran great, winter of 84'
3rd 68, 454, T400 4:11 gears 3500 JW stall, to NC to move, gas hog winter of 87'
Nova "now" 468 600 solid cam, T400 3500 JW converter, 3:55 gears, fun on the street,
just drive it,

What rear gear do you have. I have a 6 speed but, 4th is 1:1 like a auto. I have 3.89 gears and run 3200 at 65 mph. I have dumps and is pretty loud. I live on the north side and could come by on Sunday to see what 4th would be like through the rpm range. Really screams at 7000!

Having O/D is a blessing from heaven!! I have a th400 in my Monte Carlo SS and it DRINKS gas on highway and stays at a high RPM working my engine hard!!! I am looking for a 4l80E.

That was the best bet, considering strength. It does rob more power, but that's how it goes. The only other choice, and it may mess with the computer either way, is a 200-4r. Those are light(under 100 lb) and when built, can handle plenty of power and have OD work at WOT. Thanks to the GN, we now know what they're capable of handling regarding vehicle weight and power, is... a bunch!
