the biggest cost for him is starting with 2.73 gears he cannot simply swap ring and pinions, he has to swap the entire rear gear carrier, big money there.

New z06 3.42 with shot peened gears is $1100
Built DTE 3.42 (or any other ratio) with hardened output shaft is $1700. If I buy a rear I'm going this route. This car will eventually have at least 600rwhp. I don't want to break a shaft. I guess I could find out how much it would cost later to add the hardened shaft, and maybe go with a normal unit to save $$$ while I am still low on power.

I went to dynotune because my used bracket off a wrecked car was slightly misaligned, shredded a layer off the belt after a week. Still not totally right, but I bought the ECS bracket/tensioner setup. Just having trouble getting free time to drive down and get it installed (free).

I know the formula for a blown a4 vette to get into the 9s and trap that high (650-700rwhp, 3.42, ss3600 stall combo run by quite a few of the procharger/paxton guys at corvetteforum), and I'm plannning on going a little lower on power and smaller on the stall and settle for a 10 sec. capable car in the end. 3200 rpm stall at most, 600ish rwhp at most. So as long as my car can reach 140mph I'll be happy and wouldn't mind more aggressive gears than 3.42 to have a little low speed fun. Of course anything higher than 3.42 forces me to spend the extra $$$ for a DTE rear.
Like I've said before, I'm no expert. I just aim and press the gas. Keep the advice coming guys.

1) More low end fun
2) Spend the extra jack and "forgetabbout" the rearend issue all together.
You are at a point in the project where I am sure you really just want to address the rear end issue once and for all. Compromising now will only be rolling the dice later on, probably at a point when you don't want to and it will be a major setback for other mods.
In the meantime why not get track times on it now? It's kinda like taking lots of pictures of your kids as they grow up. Before you know it, you'll be in the 10's wondering where your little baby went, all grown up.

If my car ever gets where I want it to be, the highest trap speeds in the 1/4 mile would be in the 135-140mph range.

430-450 also works for f-bods into the 10's, but to do it with that little power you need to have Everything else dialed in perfectly, and a very good driver same as the vettes.

He isn't the cheapest, I guess I got the friends/family deal.

As far as tens go, with my current power and an a4 I'd have to go bigger than I want on the converter. Blown a4 guys with my power are hitting mid - low 11s with 3.42 gears and 2800-3000rpm stalls. Tens is just a long term end point. I want to stay small on the converter, 3000-3200rpm. And the power to make up for that is only a pulley swap + meth away.
