Hmm lost a Cobalt tach one day and my cd's cause my windows were down, on a base! Here I am with people I have to trust my life with, and there were a shitload of common thieves running around, in a place you should feel safe and secure. Scum lives everywhere, I'm sure also in the Disneyland area.
Car is always locked down since that day.

Is theft the reason there is a law against leaving your car unattended? I can see how it's silly to do that, but at the same time do we really need another law to protect people from themselves? Or is it a matter of them worried the car will start rolling and damage something? I just dont see the point in there being a law against it if it doesnt affect anybody.

Ill admit that cops sketch me out. I get followed all the time down back roads to my parents house and ill be doing nothing wrong. In anycase of my feeling for them, i can see how a law for making it harder for theives to steel a car could be usefull. Those "tax dollars hard at work" would be going to finding you friggin car because you were a mush for leaving it running and unattended. Id rather them be doing something more constructive w/ thier time (and my money) then finding a car that shouldnt have been so easy to steal in the first place. dont get me wrong, not a fan of "most cops" (have a few friends that are cops) and hate silly laws but some actualy make sense. that and i cant see my self leaving my car running w/o me around. i hate to just plain leave it lol.

I always go to court to fight tickets. Just study your rights and dont fall for there trick questions. Ask him if you are being detained or if your free to go, take the ticket and go to court. Everytime I have gone to traffic court, most people just say no contest, and just bend over a get railed in the *** with a fine and court cost. Plead not guilty, if it is something retarded like this, odds are the judge will throw it out. They dont want or have the time to waste on this menial crap.

Don't forget guys...Florida cops are scared about the whole Ammendment 1thing. They are worried about job cuts. Traffic citations pay for them as well as new hires. I'm not just saying that, it's true. There was an article about tickets paying for new cops in Jacksonville. Just don't do anything stupid on the road and you SHOULD be OK. There are always the overzealous ones that will just pull you over and give you a hard time. There is nothing you can do about them.

It's even against the law to leave your keys in the ignition- again, if the car gets stolen the insurance company could claim that you created the situation-

Hmm, let's see- cop sees a running car sitting outside the convenience store, nobody around. How does he know that this isn't a getway car? Probably what attracted his attention in the first place, better go check this out.....

I understand all sides on this one. Doesn't mean I would side with anyone though. here's my take on this... IMHO

1) I think your foolish for leaving a car running outside like that. I wont even leave my windows down most places. I work hard for my money and my stuff to just to give some A-hole and easy score like that.

2) I think you should have given a little more respect/serious attention to the officer. Whether he's a ***** or not, laughing and making light of the situation and getting testy with "the man" doesn't really win you any favors. I would have simply acted totally interested in learning the facts and/or at least apologetic and given alot of yes sir/no sir answers. I guess thats just me though.

3)If the tint is truly illegal, and you are as innocent/ignorant to this fact as you say... you would be able report that dealership to the authorities for it and they can take the heat and pay your fees or you could sue or something.... Assuming you paid with a credit card or got a receipt. Any tint place I've ever seen or dealt with that does the 'illegal' tinting will have you pay cash and deny ever dealing with you in most cases... hehe... 28% is legal limit I believe.

4) since when has starting your car up been a severe waste of gas?!?! Thats a really bad/lame reason to mention for not wanting to turn it off. Starter issues, passenger in the car listening to music or using AC or heat would suffice but, wasting gas???? WTF?

5) the cop sounds like a douchebag in the scenerio you presented but, then again, he may have been watching you for some other reason and was actually exercising some niceness by giving you a BS ticket instead of some kind of moving violation citation.

EDIT : Didn't mean to sound preachy and like your wrong or whatever.... I just wanted to give you my honest take on how I read into your initial post about it. Hopefully its just a annoying learning experience and gets thrown out.

Read the papers in the Volusia County Area. One poor dude has his Avalon taken from his apartment complex as he was taking his trash to the dumpster. He got the trash out of the passengers side, and the thief jumps in the drivers door. It turns into a foot chase with the victim losing of course.
I can't speak too much about the attitude the officer gave you...I wasn't there.
Lock your doors and don't leave your keys in your car either.

I'd say the law is more to protect people from themselves than for safety. 10 minutes writing a citation and hopefully educating someone is a lot less time than 45+ minutes doing paperwork, then a detective has to get involved. Then even more time if the vehicle is ever located, plus insurance claim, etc....

I work the beach in my county and I can't tell you how many people get their vehicles broke into and want to cry to me when they either (1) left their vehicle unlocked, or (2) locked it but left their purse, $1500 laptop, and a nice camera in plain view. Come on, help me out a little bit atleast.

FYI, as far as tickets to raise money. That may be true to an extent with city agencies, but county agencies see almost nothing off any citations issued.

Personally the way I look at the law is Im getting in trouble because other people are dishonest out there and will steal a car. Why is that my fault and why should I get in trouble for it? Fair enough?

As far as me not respecting the cop, look at my original post, i said I respect cops. I know they are for the better no matter what of cousre. The cop was actually a cool guy, and if it seems like I was being disrespectful, it was more of me in shock that this was going on. He was cool with being informative to me and I learned and he knows that. Im grateful that I only got 1 ticket instead of two. The whole situation is just aggrivating. Like why did he just have to come give me a hard time? Hes a person just like me, I just got off a long bad day at work and not that lifes fair, but that just wasnt fair...

lie said before wasting gas is a lame excuse, and just for the record, i hate it when people say "my tax dollars at work" yea well guess ******* what cops pay taxes too! therefore they are basically paying there own paycheck, and your bitching about getting a ticket fr leaving your car running, but if your car was stolen you would be bitching that the cops didnt do anythign to prevent it. i understand that ur pissed cause u got a ticket nad just want to rant but this wasent exactly a good ticket to rant about
